A friend of mine was doing some remodeling on his old log cabin.i was able to get a piece for my mantel. the tree was cut around 1845, white oak. i used an ax and old hand plainer. it turned out nice i think
thanks , it was very dry moisture content was very low it was some of the hardest wood i have ever worked with. the shavings made a great fire starter.
It will be oak...The guy is taking forever. He is probably 80, So I think he built it and forgot about it. I stopped in one day and it was sitting there finished except for stain covered in sawdust. He's sending it down to the Amish to stain, may never see it again lol. Just noticed you are from Medina, The shop is Elagant Wood Products on route 82, Pretty much at the intersection of route 83!! Small world!!
Hey thanks Jags, when I first got the piece of wood that was my first thought, to leave the joint on it. To think that 165 plus years ago someone was settling in the Ohio valley and building themselves a cabin with that wood. Makes me smile that I was able to use it :cheese:
