i've been looking and responding to ads and placing ads for a few weeks with zero luck and with no plans today, i got a call for a downed tree in a backyard. it was 'big and long and some kind of hardwood' said the man on the other end. ran over and it was indeed big and long with the upper end bucked up along with a lot of the thicker limbs. fired up the saw and cut some more up and filled my poor Subie to the brim and got home and unloaded. headed back and there was a pickup leaving with a big load but there was still the big chunks left so i helped an old guy turn and cut the big stuff (thanks LogRite!). i had to split some stuff on the spot to get it more manageable and this time left a little breathing room. this round had more of the trunk pieces. so here's the pics. i think it's maple, but i have no honest clue. any leaves and seeds were buried under piles of sawdust. regardless, i got to stretch my legs and can refine my method and, uh, start looking for a trailer.

things went so quick, i think i can do much larger scores if it's closer or i have more space to haul. great workout too!

Looks like you got yourself into some firewood!

Good score, looks like red or silver maple. Slip it now and it'll prolly be ready next year.

Nice.

I agree that a trailer would be a good idea. Or, what I did years ago when I had a Chevy Suburban, I cut pieces of plywood to protect the bottom, sides and front of the cargo space. One time I came home from a trip to the sawmill with a load of slabs to the ceiling and two feet beyond the tailgate. I figured it was close to a full cord! The Suburban was low in the read end!

nothing like a redneck pickup truck-load of wood!.....now yer hooked!!

No worries! I have a trailer and still find myself filling the suv like that to maximize each load.

Great score!

toonces, that looks like soft maple. Some folks give it a bad rap but not here as we like it. The stuff will dry super fast so that will be ready by next fall with no problem. It usually splits super easy too and you can make kindling fast with it. The kindling is one of the best as it lights easy and burn hot so this helps your other wood get started quickly. I like to put at least one split in with other hardwoods to get the fire going.

Any other guesses other then soft maple? I got alot of similar wood.

Looks like soft maple to me, and I agree with Dennis - it's excellent for kindling, shoulder season, and for mixing a few splits with a big load of oak to get the high density woods going. Cheers!

Just got done bucking up and splitting a slightly larger tree than that one, and it was Maple too. I'm going with soft Maple. I got just over 1/3 cord out of the tree I had, and there's a bit more of the branches to do for kindling but the snow is getting too deep. It'll have to wait for spring.

+yeah. I grab that stuff whenever I can. Got some Red that I bucked down the road right now, that I need to pick up. Seems like the last batch I stacked dried faster that the Ash or Cherry did...

Hey toonces- most Subaru's have the luggage rack things on top, don't they? Could have piled more on the roof? Just kiddin- nice wood score. We always welcome maple here. You wouldn't believe some of the things our Forester has hauled....

i've thought of getting a Yakima cargo basket for the top of the car so i can carry the saw and tools up top and take out the baby seat to fold the back seats down but i don't think the Subie would make it home with that much load. i'm almost certain it wouldn't. for now, the fishing rods still get to ride up top heh.

i'm currently trying to arrange a scouting mission to a coworker's neighbor's house who supposedly has a large oak downed. i'm itchin' to get out and pile up the pile.

Nice score
+1 on the trailer plan.
Fewer trips & easier on the Subie.
It starts adding up, keep hauling :)

my buddy who runs his fireplace sparingly and has a large wood lot behind his house has green lighted me to take whatever is down in the backyard. plus, he wants to cut down a couple of questionable trees. free wood and learn how to down a tree. score!

Red Maple - one of the 'soft' maples. Good firewood.
