Hey guys quick question. So the home I recently bought already has a thimble and chimney. Now I just purchased a Jotul f3cb. So now to buy the flue. The present chimney is 8 inch double wall. But I dont know how to tell if it is metalbestos or what the brand is.
I was told that the different brands of flue/chim pipe cannot inter connect with each other. So what ever my chimney is I will have to buy the same brand flue. Is this true? if so how do I tell which brand my chim is? I dont see a stamped lable anywhere.
also one more stupid question. an 8 inch pipe means the diameter of the INNER pipe is 8 inches right?

8 inch does refer to the inside diameter.

I don't think you have to worry about compatability between brands of stovepipe and chimneypipe. Someone else might have something to say about using 8 inch chimney with a Jotul 3CB, but I would just point out that you are going to need a reducer or adapter to get down to the 6" - which is what you're probably going to use for the stovepipe. What does your manual have to say about all this?

Yes 8" pipe refers to ID. As for recognizing what brand you have you'll just have to know usually (silly little stickers tend to go away quickly. Look at the top of the chimney cap alot of times it'll be stamped there. Take some pictures and post them here I'm sure we can get it identified for you. Matt is correc though you don't necessarily have to use Metalbestos connector pipe with metalbestos chimney. I won't swear to it but I don't think Metalbestos makes single wall. I'm not sure I don't sell it.

yes I was planning on having to use a reducer between the chim and the 6 inch flue. Does the reducer install rite onto the chim? Thanks guys

For a round flue the minimum for the F3 CB is six inches and the max is eight inches. His draft might not be as good as possible but the eight inch pipe is Kosher with Jotul's manual.

So as far as compatability between manufacuters. Can I use duravent flue and reducer to a metalbestos chim?

If it fits, and it probably will, I would not worry about it.

You should probably describe the thimble and exactly what kind of piece comes out the wall.

Stovepipe's expected useful life is much less than chimney, so you're going to be replacing it several times over the life of a chimney. If it were an issue, it would have come up.

Have you checked with your local building dept they should have records of that liner manufacturer and its labeling.
Well they are susposed to have complete records of permitted liners ect. Then again not all require or enforce the code and that's if a permit was pulled.. Which all too often is not the case.. Which brings up another point. how Luckey do you feel venting into an un inspected unpermitted unknown setup?

Sorry venting a bit here
: If I do my job correctly and other inspectors do theirs as well, the death toll from wood burning incidents should decrease. I would like to think we can get it under 500+, recorded in 2003. I'm doing my danmest, as are the fellow Hearth members. I am not spending this amount of time trying to point you in the right direction to fail. I am hoping you become a lifetime Hearth member..

I hit hard to drive a point of safety home. You don't use a tack hammer to drive a spike?
Point being he is already asking the right questions here. I just re-enforced the need to get it right.

Earlier I posted where I get to inspect a burned out home. Not a pleasent experience. One that I wish never occures again.
Grim yes, avoidable again yes. Had he said his existing Class A--- was not manufactures indentified I would not have posted. The fact that its safety factor is unknown., I presented the situation he should advoid

Thanks for the tips guys. And dont worry Elk I plan on getting at least a sweeps inspection. But I think that you think I have a chimney like an old brick chimney. What I have is the big piece of stainless coming out the roof of the house. this is still called a chimney rite.
Also I guess I still do not fully understand the answer to my question. so I will try to rephrase.
I think my chimney is metalbestos brand (I think this because the only stove dealer in town only sells metalbestos. And since there are no roads in or out of the town I live it is a safe bet it came from this dealer). Now however, I think I would rather use Duravent double wall 6"stovepipe. Because it is a bit cheaper via the net and have heard good reviews. So could I do this. Can 6"double wall duravent stove pipe connect to 8" metalbestos chimney?
Sorry I am so thick headed guys but I want to make sure it will work before ordering. I will try to take some pics of the existing and post later on.

I looked them up. If you indeed have metalbestos these are the numbers you will need.

Metalfab part # 258240 simpson #8860

WOW Thanks alot MSG! You are great. Just one more quick question. Since as I previously stated that the only dealer around me only has Metalbestos. Anyone know of a good place I can order duravent pipe? any experience with harts hearth? Thanks all very much.

If you can find them local, that would be best. UPS is famous for tearing stuff up. I didnt see connector pipe in the metalbestos catalog, so you local shop has to be carrying something to use for connector pipe. If you have to order it, i would buy from the geographicly closed place that will ship it. It dings real easy.

I'm guessing you live in Whittier, Alaska. Only the train, pontoon plane, and ferry stop there. Am I right?

Nope not Whittier. Heck I wish a train and pontoon stoped HERE. No we are in southeast Alaska. plane and ferry.
