Just wondering what i should expect to see for stove top temps for this woodstove. Max temp and cruising temps as well. I know the burn times are not as long with this stove as the bigger modles but what should i expect to see??

I'm not sure the temperatures that particular stove should see, but you should check the manual if you still have it; the max temps as well as cruising temperatures are listed. If you don't have it, you can find an electronic version of Napoleon's website.

I have found the operating temps, now where on the stove do i measure them at? I have a IR temp gun do i check on the stove top or on the chimney?

My stove top thermometer is ~6" SE of the flue collar. It may not be accurate since the IR reads a couple hundred degrees higher.

It cruises between 5-600F for about 1-2 hours then starts to drop. It'll hang around 300 with coals for a few more hours.

If I reload around 10 pm I'll have just enough coals to reload at 6-7 am. It can be tough some mornings.

I start with top down burns, then load north to south, if possible, on a bed of coals. Longer peices I lay east-west.

If you don't know what those terms mean, get familiar with them. It will help a lot with the learning curve.

Instead of starting with small kindling then adding larger pieces as the fire catches. put larger pieces on the bottom with progressively smaller kindling with newspapers on top. Light the newspapers and let the fire burn from the top down.

I drilled a 1/4 inch hole in my trivet and use a probe flue gas thermometer to get stove top temps then the magnetic for trivet top temp. I range from 600 - 700, occasional peak at 800.

When I see the wood burning with bright orange flames I push the rod to 5.

When it gets above 300 I push it to three

Above 400 it should be between one and two.

Around 500 I push the spring to the ash lip.

This process takes 15-20 minutes depending on type of woo, moisture content how cold it is, etc.
