I approached a guy about some White Oak storm damage logs that I noticed a while back. He said "Sure, help yourself, and take a look around. There may be some other wood you can use." There sure was! Gotta be at least three cords here. I've got more wood here to split than I can shake a stick at! :gulp:

Here's the White Oak. Still have a couple more big rounds to get, which should fill out the front row a bit.

This is the back row of the White Oak pile, showing a few intact rounds from the trunk. After rolling a few of those onto the trailer, I decided to split the rest!

There were a couple of decent White Ash, one lying down and another standing dead. There's another one still over there that I have to check, lying down with little bark left, some of it suspended off the ground. Part, if not most of it should be good; Down Ash seems to hold up pretty well. There's a bit of miscellaneous Oak at the right end of the pile. Second pic is a different angle.

Couple of Pignut Hickory, one down and one standing with the top busted out. This stack of rounds is two rows deep.

Processing area is just about full. I need to split and stack. It's supposed to warm back up at the end of week.
In the third pic down, next to the forked tree, are two rows, 2/3 BL and 1/3 Black Oak. Below (left) of the Cedar tree is about 2/3 cord of Sugar Maple. Above the old tire is a pile of Pin Oak. "Pending scrounges" are another cord+ of Pin Oak, a couple more BL and some Red Maple in a yard that I bucked the other day (I'll split some of that med/small for starter wood.) Luckily, I'll have time to hit these piles pretty hard in the next few weeks if the weather stays good.

I had the same thing happen for me in the fall. A guy ran an ad on Craigslist for some Silver Maple, free. I got there and wound up removing about 4 cords in 3 days. Took all of October to split but i'm good for next year!
Anyone know how well Silver Maple burns?

Never burned it but I assume that it's similar to Red, another soft Maple. Medium-heat wood so it starts and burns a little more quickly. Great for times when you don't need a ton of heat or a real long burn. As I mentioned, I'm going to split a portion to a smaller size that I can use to get cold starts and reloads going more quickly.

silver maple burns great, but its not a good wood for overnight fires unless you plan on getting up to reload on the middle of the night. We use a lot of silver maple for daytime fires. It should be ready for burning by next fall if you get it split up right away, but I'd plan on getting some good hard stuff for overnight fires...

That's not a "Score" that's a "Gold Mine" :bug:
$$$ Money!
That will stack up nicely & put you ahead of the game.
Great pictures!!

Always feels great to get that wood piled up and take a few minutes (or a few hours with some beers) to admire the work and amount of wood you've managed to get - nice work! Cheers!

Thanks everybody for the kind comments! It's a bit of a mess now but when I can get it stacked, it'll be lookin' good to me. :) I tried to get a couple of "cold call" scores earlier, but they didn't pan out. This is the first score that's come through for me, although I did have an "in" with this guy.

Some may recall me mentioning that I'm cutting for four households, with some help on the splitting and stacking. Now, I can't believe what I just heard. My SIL knows an older couple that lives nearby. Their son enjoys cleaning up their woods and stocking the wood shed, but nobody in the family burns very much. He just told my SIL to come over and clear the shed out to make room for more wood! Free Oak, Ash and Cherry, already split. Does it get any easier than that? Looks like I may have a chance to get everyone ahead this year and get into the maintenance mode, just replacing one season's worth of wood each year. With a couple years' cushion, it's Red & Black Oak for everyone!
