I've been using mostly our local pellet, Uncle Jed's, for the last two seasons. They are a pine/spruce mix and are very good... I've also used Eurekas which are a Lodgepole pine pellet... they burn a little hotter and cleaner than the Jeds but are a bit pricier.

I also bought a sampling of Bear Mountain pellets.... these are the real deal... hot and VERY clean... a Douglas Fir/ Western Red cedar blend.

Since I ran out of Bear's, I bought these Lumberjacks a few days ago... they have a lot more fines than the Jed's and a little more than the Bear's.... the Jed's are triple screened so you see MAYBE a tablespoon of fines in each bag.

As far as heat goes the Lumberjack's fall short... they are an 80/20 hard/soft mix... the ash hasn't been too bad so far but I have to keep my stove on #3 to keep the house @ 72-74 where the Bear's would heat it to 76F with the same setting and outdoor temps. These are daytime temps with good sun... last night I ran the stove on #3 overnight and it was 70F this morning... the NG furnace is set at 70F and it was on when I got outta bed.

It will be cold again tonite with below zero temps... we'll see how we do.

Sounds like the stove is still doing Ok with them, But its real hard to compare when you burned some of the best available. Even pellets that come close seem to be a let down.

Best I tested so far this year have been the Cubex. I just bet they might give them Bear's a good run. To bad we are very far away. I would send you 2 bags to try. Shipping would kill the deal though.

Test on!

UPDATE....today I had my stove running on #2 with Lumberjacks... 18F outside/72 inside/lots of sunshine. Indoor temp 72F.

Tonite @ 8:00PM... now burning 100% Bear Mountain's... +5F... no sun... the house is 77F.

I just shut off my stove until it cools down. Big difference.

I have been burning Pennywise for a few years now. I think they are absolutely terrible pellets, however they did produce more heat then the lumberjacks. I am now burning a skid of lumberjacks and i am not happy with them. It seems hard to get a decent flame and the heat output is very poor, however they create far far far less ash then the Pennywise.
