I decided to break out the soot eater and clean the chimney for a little mid winter sweep. I burned only 3/4 cord of wood, mostly ash and silver maple that has been split since June 2011. Even though it is burning really well, i figured I would see how the build up is since this is my first full winter ever burning. When i swept in the fall 2011, i got about a 1/2 - 3/4 coffee can out from the previous year, which i was burning maple and unseasoned oak I bought from a guy that claimed it was seasoned (we all know who that goes). That was only burning just over a 1/2 cord. This year i felt like i was getting the hang of the PE Summit, i figured i would be able to tell by how much creosote came out. Well... after feeding ~28 ft of soot eater up the liner, i only ended up with about 3/4 -1 cup of black powder creosote. I think this is very little build up, what do you guys think?

That ain't bad at all. How's the cap?

Its about 32 ft from the ground but from there it looks pretty good. I have a multi flu cap on that is about 25" long so there's alot of air space for smoke to vent through.

3/4 cup is nothing. That's barely on the walls of your chimney in the length you are talking about. Heck you'll get that kind of coating even if you were burning 100% efficiently.

Im glad it gave you some peace of mind, but I wouldnt have bothered cleaning after burning less than a cord of ash and maple... both woods season extememly fast and shouldnt give much creosote off if burned properly. Better safe than sorry tho.

I am happy that it was "nothing" rather than.... oh boy.. where did all that come from! Still getting the hang of everything and I have gotten much more comfortable with operating the stove efficiently. Having a nice warm fire is really nice when sitting around hanging out watching tv.

You did have that sooteater spinning and attached to a drill right

Great job.

Hmmmmm.... its supposed to spin?

That's funny. Of course. I Didn't have the drill revving to the moon but yes it was spinning prob about 1/2 throttle. That is about the same I did the first time and got 4x as much out. Heck maybe even a little faster this time now that I was more comfortable with it.
