Hi,
Going through a bunch of options here, but seriously thinking about moving into my rental townhouse I have (downsizing). My question is I would like to put a pellet stove in the basment and vent it into the window well I created to install a window for the basement. Can I do this by code???
thanks Phil

My guess would be no, but call your local fire department. They should be able to give you a definitive answer to this question in about 5 seconds.

I'd be scared to do it myself, the first surprise heavy snowstorm you get could be bad if the snow covers the vent. I remember people dying from CO poisoning due to vents being covered a few years back.

Your vent must be above grade by so many inches, read the installation manuals for the stoves you are considering.

maybe into the window well up a couple feet and terminate???
like a high efficiency furnace

DISCLAIMER;
but check codes to be legal, I am not a pellet stove installer but
I slept at a Holiday Inn Express last nite

thanks guys, I understand the challenges now..... another question then, can I run the vent up to the ceiling of the basement and run it horizontal in the joist space to the outside??? will have enough clearance in the joist space??? I have 10" joists or 9 1/4"
Thanks Phil

I asked my installer about this several years ago when I was thinking of buying another stove and moving my old one down to my basement. According to him it was against code to vent through a window well. I bet I could have got around it by actually removing the entire window assembly and then using glass block or brick, cement board, etc to close in the window opening after running the pipe through it.

So your question is probably a good one - open to interpretation. Technically - can you run it through a window well and somehow leave part of the window/frame in place - I'm guessing no. But remove the window so all you have left is just a hole in a concrete wall...and then it's the exact same thing as drilling a 4" hole in the wall with a concrete drill to run a pipe through.

It would be easy enough to call your local building engineering office in your city or county and ask them.

Thanks Smoke show..... thats exactly what I could do and not worry about the window well. I appreicate your pictures very much, my vent would be out of the front of the house not ideal for sure but I'm also hoping there are options for the end of the vent on the outside of the house.......
Thanks Phil
