I find myself checking the weather several times a day and the odd thing is, I don't make any real adjustments to my stove since it does just fine in "room temp" mode. Currently, I don't even use a separate shoulder pellet. I have several weather sites bookmarked but I tend to end up at Intellicast or Weather Underground. For my Android phone, Weatherbug is the best.

Someone just about a mile away from me operates a personal weather station and all the data is available on the internet, which is just as good as having my own weather station. Unfortunately though, he is not going to be hosting it anymore so I'm thinking about doing my own. Just not in the budget right now.

The obsession continues in the warmer months too since I bike about 100+ miles a week.

Anyone else a weather nerd and what resources do you prefer?

not me
I have a weather rock on the porch
if its cold its cold out
if its warm its warm out
if its wet it is raining
if its white it has snowed
and if I find it on the floor its very windy

I figure the thermostat does the work for me.

The only thing I care about is snow.

Yes I'm a weather nerd.... I also look and multiple sites (even subscription ones). I actually get annoyed with some of the local weather guys because they won't forecast they are just reading a report.
I run a summer business on a lake so I need to know the weather and I use to plow in the winter. The rest of the time I'm just being a geek :) I also have a friend that almost became a weatherman so he is worse than me....lol

PS I just started doing the shoulder season pellet thing this year. Of course the temps this year are all over the place...no real "shoulder season" :)

Iron Pony I need to get one of those rocks it will save alot of time and money !!

Being a Weatherman is the one profession were you can be paid to be completely wrong. Who needs technology when you can just use a rock. Thats a great post haha. In Vermont its just always cold and snowy so you just come to expect it.

I've also toyed with the nerdiness of having a weather station but every review I've read really hammers the available stations as being flimsy, non-reliable, cheaply made Chinese crap so I haven't dropped my sheckles on one yet.

From the little research I've done, The Davis units get good reviews but a complete set-up will run you from 500 to 1000 dollars.

I agree but way too expensive. I can buy a LOT OF ROCKS for that much money or a 42" flat screen always tuned to the weather channel. :)

My daughter is a meteorologist so I have no choice but to be a weather nerd. She loves to forecast and is right most of the time. She hates it when I "out guess" her forecast...maybe I will buy a rock and see what that stirs up ;)

Given all of the temperature forecasts I've seen be off the mark lately you can forget about weather.com. We won't even mention the forever changing forecasts.

I am a what you might call a weather geek. And have been for about 10 years. I started out with a small inexpressive desktop weather station and found after a few weeks that It was not very accurate. Over a period of time I now have a Davis Pro set-up $1200.00 that is hooked to my confuser I now know the exact temp. humidity wind speed and amount of rain I am getting In my yard. This data is transmitted to
the NWS Weather Underground and NOAA every 10 minuets. I wanted to have this information because when you hear the weather from Boston a lot of times there will be a large difference in what they are seeing and what I an seeing. like today. Boston said we will see snow tonight and as I type this at 2:00 P.M. It Is snowing In Plaistow.
Look at my SIG and you will see a link to my station

I don't know if I'm a weather nerd, but I'd develop a temp ocd since I'd became a pellet stove owner/user. I now have 8 thermometers throughout the house to check both the indoor and outdoor temps. Also, regularly checking on weather.com for hourly and 5 day forecasts.

I check the hourly forecast on Weather.com and its been pretty darn accurate for my area.

I follow the weather and know when it is cold too. It is 8 degrees here right now. Brrrrrrrrrrrrr I do have a weather station, and I am glad I do. Something to mess with when you are bored. Burning Somerset as a result temps.

And if it's GONE somebody STOLE IT!!!!! But, yeah, a lot of my job now is outdoors, and my road is 1/2 mile, private, dirt, town don't plow. Snow and ice really affect my life. Yeah, I watch, and listen to, and check the internet, a total of 9 weather forecasts. Then when it's over, I deal with what happened.

I keep an eye on the weather, Not as much now as when I had my smaller stove. Since getting a larger stove than can easily handle my heating chore. About all I need to keep an eye on is days that will stay below freezing. I switch my stove from Auto/Off to Hi/Lo if the day time high is below 32ºF.

I watch more for bad weather and my daily work commute.

I feel no need to try and forecast weather when my taxes already pay for NOAA. As a sailor and student pilot I live and possibly die by the weather but I trust NOAA's predictions more than my own.... RT

That pellet man avatar is great, dude. You create that yourself?

Whats his nationality, hardwood heat, somerset or maybe inferno?

I bought & installed a La Crosse remote weather station that does, temp, dew point, pressure, wind direction & speed, rainfall, etc, etc. Works very well keeping me informed about what's going on now or down the road.
