grate or not

From what i've read the grate is mainly for burning coal, to allow the oxygen under the coal. Wood is suppose to burn better sitting directly on ash/sand/firebrick.
 
My defiant has ridges cast into the bottom plate so I filled those low areas with sand to protect the bottom of the stove and burn right there. From what I have learned here these stoves are designed to burn wood right on the floor of the stove so a grate is a no no.
 
Burning on the floor of the stove will give you much longer burn times, that's what I do.
