I did some surfing yesterday but couldn't find an answer to my question.
I'm redoing my hearth and wanted to use fiberboard then 1/2" stone on top.

If I want to use a high R value fiberboard like the Micor, can you put the motor mix on it then the stone tiles like you can with Durock? The guy at the hardware store mentioned that you would want to use a thin 1/4" plywood over the fiberboard. That doesn't make sense to me, becauase the plywood is flammable. Isn't using a flammable plywood on TOP of the fiberboard a big NO-NO?

How is this supposed to be done? Any experience or knowledge of this subject would help me out.

As you said, putting a combustible piece of ply on top of the Micore is stupid, at best. The Micore is not very rigid so you might consider a "sandwich" of, from bottom up -durock-micore-durock-stone.

There are a ton of threads about this, and it will take some time to get through to the best ones, but if, for starters, you search for Micore you'll come across a bunch of valuable info on this.

Also, I think there's a wiki on the front page of the website about this, but not 100% sure on that.

I wouldn't listen to the "hardware store guy" . You can use plywood UNDER the fiber bOard then mortar and screw the fiber board to that to make it more rigid if the plywood is on top it is pointless It does exactly as you said and takes away from the r value.

So it should be your:
Frame
Plywood
Mortar/screws
Fiberboard/ screws into the ply
Mortar
Tile.. In that order

Is the hearth for your Fireview? If so, I don't think that stove requires a high R value under it. You may be able to use concrete backerboard and then your stone.

Put cement board over the micore and then tile. The issue with putting tile on the micore is it isn't a very solid surface for the thinset to bond to.
