Well, maybe mostly everything! Except not to go bar hopping and picking up someone he ought not to have. RIP Bob Crane.

Saturday morning, I taught her how to perform a basic cleaning. She did the entire thing and did not say anything negative.
She is more savvy then she was on Friday...

I think if she needs to, she will clean it. Or if I "accidentally forget to clean the stove before I go to work" she would have to.

Will have to ask her to do it with me watching this time.

GRRRRRRRRREAT Thread

Well I'm not a wife, but am a female.
I have installed all the stoves here at the ranch and do the maintenance work on them.
Redesigned the controls on the old whitfields and do the cleaning.

My sis lives here with me and she is a great cook, and does that sort of kitchen stuff.

She also fills the stove before retiring in the late eavening. I crawl into my little hole about 7:30-8 and rise at around 5 ish and refill the stoves.

I am envious of the one wife mentioned that can fix the TV.

I am good with household wiring and such, but the sofisticated electronic devices I tend to stay away from.

I will assemble a computer and fool with that stuff.


I am the one that screens the shells and packs them upstairs though, as sis is just a small gal and packing two 25 pound pails is too much for her.

Although is need be, she would just do a half bucket or ?? to giterdone

I think we all have our stong points, and you guys might be supprised, that if push comes to shove the girls will giterdone.

If the Oil furnace was OUT, they will get a fire built.

Now I realize that there are the ones that are CLUELESS.

Ahhh well, such is life.

The grand kids were over and I am teaching the 5 yo all about the pellet stove and how it works.


The big thing is to instill in the little guy, that the HOPPER is not a place to hide his small toys :bug:

Been briefing the Son Inlaw on the finer points of cleaning the stoves too.

The "Kid" is a fireman and fools with dirt bikes and such, and the learning curve will be brief to get him up to speed.

Just a little run through on how to get the baffles out and such.

I hope this thread continues.

To all the wives out there. Ms Snowy says to "Git with the Program" and learn all about them stoves..

When I posted the above 3 days ago I knew this would be an awesome thread and I wasn't disappointed. I have been telling my wife about this thread and the different replies and she said "what are you going to say?" So here goes.....

My wife is the best thing that ever happened to me. 26 years and going strong. She takes care of everything around the house, raised our three kids while I was out working 3 different jobs. She works full time at one job and owns her own small business on the side. She can drive a truck and a bus with her CDL License. She can back a 26 foot boat on the trailer down the boat ramp and then go put the trailer away. She drives and docks the boat without ever a scratch. She waxes the entire boat every season on MOTHERS DAY weekend. She makes sure that everything is taken care of here....but since this is a thread about being pellet savvy......Does she know how to run the stove? No. Does she ever put pellets in? No. Does she know how many tons I have in the basement? No. Does she watch me clean the stove? No. Has she ever cleaned it? No. Does she have any intention of learning? No. And the last question...do I care?? NO!! I've got it made...and she knows it.

This is the main reasion I got a pellet stove. I am gone alot for work and I figured a wood burning stove would be to much work for her. So far she fills the stove turns it on and off, and cleans it. I have shown her how to adjust it yet. It has surpirzed me that she only had to have me on the phone once to turn it on. And the rest she picked up on her own.

When I got the fact that it will save us $300 a month in propane costs through her head. She was on board to learn how to use it.

We live in a Triple wide Manufactured home that I enginnered a full daylight basement for.

Yup, buy the house then make the basement fit under it.

We will heat the entire upstairs for less than $200 for the entire heating season (sept-June)

Using 2 Whitfield stoves running on nut shells.

This girl could care less about the little extra fiddling to make it all work.
I know a fellow who lives about an hour way from us and they have the same house (floor plan) and his wife is scared to death of anything that burns anything to heat with.
They use the installed electric forced air furnace and their electric bill is $1500 a MONTH

OMG, I can't imagine paying $1500 a year, let alone a month.

Oh and his Missus like the house about 80F in the winter.

Damn, that would be a bridge too far for me to deal with.

$1500 a month! and I think I have it bad with my $200 bill. I would some one would haul me off before I committed to pay $1500 a month. Your $200 bill per heating season doesn't reflect all your hours of hard work you put into getting your heat. I know you wouldn't do it unless you wanted to. Good for you!

My gf is very good with it although some concepts she doesn't get yet, like how you have to prime the auger, etc.

$1500? I thought I had it bad with $550-$600 electric bills last winter. I'd probably need to take extra blood pressure medication before opening the mail if something like that was coming my way.

My wife feeds it when there is a half bag and levels off the pellets.

I'm the one who wanted the pellet stove! Burned wood for 30 years, but the back is giving out. DH is gone most weeks and only home on weekends. He wanted to stay with wood, but one winter of burning wood on weekends when he was home and the gas furnace running during the week changed his mind. We have had the XXV since 2006 and he has yet to turn it on! I do all cleaning. He does help with stacking and bring pellets in though, so that is good.

mine can fill it, turn it on and off, higher and lower and scrape out the burn pot with the flame running! difference is i'll use a putty knife to scrape it out while theres a flame, but she'll only use the fireplace ash shovel with the long handle.

as for good cleanings, and repairs well those are my job.

funny how she started off dead set against a pellet stove, then when i ordered it anyway she was completely ticked, then when the house got to be 74 AND the oil man stopped leaving thousands of dollars in little yellow bills on our door, she liked that sucker in a flash!.

then one day she comes home from work and says my friend from work wants to ask you about the stove. shes considering getting one. so after all that, now shes at work bragging about it. i bet she told this lady it was her idea to get one and i didnt want one. lmao.

I'm pretty savvy!! Dh is away all week working so if I want heat its up to me to clean and load the stove. When he's home he does it and I leave the "big" cleaning to him. We both stalk the forums and it comes up in conversation at least a couple times a week.

I enjoy drinking my coffee in front of our stove and actually being warm this winter so the work is totally worth it to me

I need to clarify the weather here in western oregon

September to late October can require a "Spot fire" in the morning using our small stove, just to take the chill off and possibly a little fire through the night at times.

November to February is the serious heating season with at least one stove running 24/7
Dec through Feb can see two stoves running at times.
March-April is heading back into the shoulders with possible on and off fires.
May and June are hit and miss months with spot fires in the morning and eavening some times.

This past Year, we had a few small fires the first week of June and then the stoves were off until late September.

This winter so far has not been bad at all. Cool but not COLD

One stove running most days around the clock and occasionally two stoves.

Right now we have snow on the ground (not a lot, just enough to be anoying)

Night before last we had two stoves all night. Shut the second one down late yesterday afternoon as the house warmed to 74F which I don't care for. 70F is fine.

Our normal weather where we are is 40's F with wind and rain through the winter months.
On occasion we can see up to 2-3 feet of snow and temps have been known to fall to near Zero.

A rare thing, but it happens.

The normal stuff is easy to handle.

The work involved to do what I do with the heating situation actually takes no more time than many folks do to get their pellets in and stacked.

Getting shells in the big rig takes about 40 minutes or so (there and back) and about 3 hours total to get it and unload the stuff, store it and then clean the truck out and hook the trailer back up.

I deliver products to concrete plants, so there can't be any shells left in the truck to contaminate the concrete.

A womans work is never done eh??

I'm pretty savvy. Husband & kids don't touch the stove. I'm the one responsible for filling the hopper and cleaning it. The ash vacuum does not work at all so I brush all the ash into the pan and dump it. You think I could get any of them to even carry the pan out for me? Nooo. Looking like a dirty chimney sweep all the time makes me want to riot lol.

Wife can set the stove to start and will fill the hopper. I do the all the research and the cleanings. She will suck up most of the heat

My wife is only concerned about the heat comming from it.
Could care less about anything else.

I received the exact opposite answer Saturday morning. I shut the stove off at 0230 and woke up to the stove running at 0930. Cleaned and vacuumed out! I taught her about a week ago and she did fine without any prompting by me.

Well I reject my last statement. My wife is not so savvy. I got a call from her last week when I was gone. and she told me the stove is not heating it was 60 in the house when it has been around 75 and the stove was making a loud noise. So she turned it off. Well when i got home this past weekend I found the noise to be comming from the hopper lid, it was vibrateing. I just used two thin rubber pads under the front corners. And for the heat it has been around 40 degrees outside and it was around 5 degrees. So i just turned up the stove, she could not figure out how. Sometimes I think she thinks I am made out of money, but I realy cant afford $125 in propane a week. When it is a max of $40 in pellets.
