Loading up the stove this afternoon I noticed a two inch crack in the baffle across the two plates e/w between the second and third burn tubes. When the stove cools down, I’ll try to post some pics. It is just more than a hairline crack, but is pretty concerning. I called the dealer where we bought the stove, and someone will be getting back with us tomorrow. The stove has never been over-fired or mistreated in any way. It is definitely not the result of a split hitting the baffle as the burn tubes prevent much of anything from hitting the baffle. Just thought I’d prod the gurus here for any info, advice, or warnings. I’m hoping that there will be an easy and painless warranty resolution.

A couple pics looking up through the side door.

schortie, how old is your stove? is there supposed to be a fiber board between the airtubes and the baffle?

The reason I'm askin is because our IR has a similiar setup for the tubes but has a fiber board in between the tubes and that plate.

If there is supposed to be something in there, it didn't come with this stove, just an insulation blanket above the baffle. The stove will only be two years old in March.

Hmmm. I was told the F500 went to the fiber baffle so as to remedy the warped cast iron baffle problem they were having.

I assume the F600 you have there has a cast iron baffle.

In any event, they may replace, they may not. I wouldn't be too concerned with stove performance/safety as a result of that crack.

I had a crack in my fiber baffle on my F500, it went all the way front to rear. Didn't harm the stove, or performance at all. In fact, I have kept both pieces in case I would ever need to re-install, and would do so without hesitation or worry. The F500 baffle has a rockwool blanket on top. The whole apparatus, baffle and blanket, are designed to hold the heat in.

Does the F600 have that blanket on top the baffle there? If so, I really wouldn't be concerned about that crack, in fact, I think the cast iron baffle is in two pieces with a seam running the entire length right?

Interesting thing, when I went to get a new fiber baffle for my F500 they gave me a choice, I could get the cast iron if I wanted, but I chose to stick with the fiber.....by the way, it was not covered by warranty and I had to pay for it.

please keep me posted how this turns out.

kinda interesting I'd think the fiberboard offers some protection against the thermal stresses right there. I know that my stove burns less than optimal without that fiberboard. I think somebody on the forum has a source for those fiber boards.

Well, the dealer has ordered the part under warranty. The baffle plates are covered but the installation is mine to deal with. Any suggestions on how to easily replace the baffle plates would be appreciated. I guess I'm also concerned about this happening again in a couple years if these parts are the same. I guess we'll see.

Just remove the top oval plate...two bolts holding it on the n/s edge underneath...no need to replace them...roll up the blanket and remove...reach in a grab the baffle plates...lift up slightly and the two plates will separate so they can come out one at a time...good luck

In the future, know that those burn tubes absolutely do not protect the baffle from being hit by splits. There are many many broken baffles on this site that happened when a split poked up and struck that baffle from below. Mine has lots of dents and gouges from wood hitting it while I was sliding in the splits from the side loading door.

I propose that the tubes offer almost no protection on a side loader like this Jotul and my heritage.
