Feeling the Heat

Hello all ! I only have 1000 sq.ft. of space to heat & my current stove handles that well with the exception of overnight burns . I feel I can't go to a larger non-cat stove because in order for it to burn efficiently ,it would drive me out of the space & I don't want to burn a lot of smaller fires which wouldn't allow me to load it up & get the most out of the stove . Do you think a cat stove like the fireview would do the trick ? I've never owned a cat stove but reading posts in this forum leads me to believe that I could get a long , easy burn with out building up creosote in the chimney .

Thanks ,
Bob

That is the strength of these stoves. Take a look at the smaller Woodstock Keystone and Palladian.

In the mean time I think we can help you to get better burn times with your current set up. What kind of wood are you burning?

Good question. I was thinking that with a good hardwood like locust or white oak that one would at least have a good coal bed 8 hrs later.

At 1.7 cuft firebox, its gonna be tough to generate useable heat for 8 hrs and still have a coal bed. Once the ash bed builds to the point that it will hold coals for an extended time, he will probably only have about 1.5 cuft of area to load fresh wood. Just my opinion.

I am burning year & a half old oak occasionally mixed in with Eco bricks . It's an E/W stove & only 1.7 cf . I have had coals after 8 hours but not much heat beyond 5 to 6 hours tops ........

Got it, you want a longer period of meaningful heat. Burntimes can be ambiguous. Thanks for clarifying.

Don't think a Fireview would be too much, I guess depending on insulation. Maybe even a BK Princess. BK is also coming out with some new 1.8 cu ft stoves shortly.

Along with woodstock, blazeking i believe makes small to medium sized cat stoves. Also dutchwest brand can be worth looking at.

Good luck.

Would these stoves ( fireview , Blaze king princess or others ) give a usable heat output for a realistic 7 to 8 hours while allowing me to burn it efficiently ? The insulation is pretty decent & it will be better this coming summer . Inside chimney , centrally located , all on one floor .

1000 sq ft should be no problem for any of the Woodstock stoves unless you live in a sieve. My Keystone's are very controllable and I burn them anywhere from 6-12 hours depending on the weather. Last few days I've been burning just the one in my basement filling it 3 times per day and it is easily heating all 2000 sq ft with outside temps in the 20's.

Thanks Todd , that is just the kind of real world info I'm looking for . Is not having a front door a bother ? Can I put a reducer from 7" to 6" on the stove to connect to my 6" flue ? With just a side door can you load it up full easily ?

I like the side door better than a front door, no problem loading it right up to the top. The Keystone is approved to run on a 6" pipe but you increase the front clearance from 8" to 10", both of mine are hooked up to 6" and the draft is great.
