Lighting Up

Feeling the Heat

Stove was cold for to long my friend, it had a cold draft that no man would want to fight...but being gone for a few days and confidant in my wood and starters. I felt the fire would heat fast and send the cold air up like so many times before.

I was wrong (15 years burning), as the wood starts burning and the smoke starts pouring out (not up) of this little stove. Opening a door was not helping send the smoke up. All I could think about was...man, that is one strong draft...you know better.

Now remember (in my defense) I was gone, the stove was cold for too long, bath room fans were running, the dryer was running and this monster draft grabbed hold of that pipe like no other and was not letting go.

So with smoke pouring out, a reminder goes off in my head as if I was reading it here, like so many times before......YOU NEED HEAT MY FRIEND...AND FAST....BUT WHAT?...and then as if the sky's opened up....PAPER...YES...PAPER. ( I haven't used paper in 3 years). I grabbed the newspaper closest to me. Turns out to be the morning paper (NO not read yet). Crumbled it up and added it to the flames, where ever I could see them to start the paper and get a HOT fire quick.

Well, it worked and chased that cold draft and smoke up like no other I've ever seen. Yes, Yes, Yes, my house was full of smoke...kids smelled like smoke as they went to school. All they can say is, Dad, when do you travel for work again ???? Ah, the love of wood buring...

LOL...

I start cold all the time. Paper in hand.

My parents buy match light charcoal or its generic on sale through the fall and winter because its cheap and use 3-4 pieces because it immediately starts burning pretty hot and gets quite a bit hotter and burns longer than other fire start aids and really cheap. I wonder if charcoal would have done the same thing.

That's one of reasons i like newspaper for starting a cold stove it gets the draft going fast.

I use paper every time.

I'm enjoying a cold draft right now myself. Oh! My bad, I thought the post was about beer!

 Ha! A man after my own mind! Cheers!

Lighting Up, should this every happen again, you need to light a couple of candles or perhaps one in each room. It will take care of that smoke. And have you ever heard of super cedars? Not only for starting fires but you could also put part of one (we quarter ours) in the flue to heat that up before starting a fire.

Thanks Backwoods...I will remember that but I'm not sure SC would of heated it up. I just don't remember having a draft that powerful before. Stoves been cold for 2 days now and no draft...funny how it can change. Thanks again.
