wood smells like BBQ sauce!

i just split some of the wood i picked up out of a lady's front yard (have no idea how old or how long it was there) and gave it a whif and man, it smells like BBQ sauce. i mean, it has this tangy vinegar-like smell to it. i'll get pics if i can, but the wood has a dark, almost reddish center to it. other than the smell, it looks fine. anyone know what that could be?
