Was cleaning the chimney today and happened to take a flashlight and look up the flue from the bottom. I notice two cracks, about 1/16" wide running vertically up either side of the liner as far as I could see. Called the installer today (It's only 5 years old) and he is coming to look at it next week. This was an expensive flue and I'm not real happy.

Sorry to hear this.

Just to double check, there is no chance this isn't a streak mark left behind from a spot the brush missed right?

If it really is a crack going a long distance in that bad boy I'm dissapointed unless this thing went though some sort of a really good chimney fire

I'm also assuming you've cleaned this liner in the past and not seen this before?

This certainly is a rarity w/out a good reason.

Hopefully the warrantee and replacement will go well as that certainly should not happen.

Keep us posted.

No, it was definitely cracks. I have never had a chimney fire (to my knowledge). I clean the liner twice a year by running a brush down from the top of the chimney. I honestly had never looked up from the bottom before as it requires me to bend over backwards over the stove and look up.

I hope it goes well also. Would you recommend that I cease burning in the meantime?

With any chimney fault, I'd have to say to err on the side of caution.

However, I'd still like to see pics of what happened here. Not sure if the hearth community could give you any different solution / suggestions by seeing them, but since this occurrence is so rare, seeing what you are working with would be helpful in the future.

Keep us posted. I just had a Supaflue poured last Summer and recently had some problems with creosote in the stove pipe and bottom section of the chimney. I'm thinking the creosote was more related to the stove pipe sections leaking air through the joints but not so sure. I was thinking of getting mine inspected for cracks, seems like I lost some of my draft. Has your chimney stayed pretty clean?

The chimney's been pretty clean. I just did a cleaning on Saturday (first of the season, burning since October) and got about two cups of powder.

I'll let you know how it goes with the installer later in the week.
