So, we love our first pellet stove so much, we're thinking of getting a second one for the walk-up family room that's 24x24 with cathedral ceilings and lots of windows. The first stove is in the livingroom and heats that side of the house very well, including heat rising upstairs. This second stove is strictly for the family room where the kids hang out. I'm not looking to spend a lot of money on a fancy stove since it'll only be in use when the kids are home from school and weekends. Of the four listed above, can you tell me which one you would pick and the reason why? Those are the four that's readily available to me and I can have installed earliest next week or the week after. I'm looking for most reliable and easiest to operate/clean. Thanks!!

AM/FM stoves has pretty good prices on refurbished Englanders.

Otherwise I can't help much.

As Smoke Show mentioned above, AM/FM Energy sells the Englander line, including units that are factory refurbished. You can save quite a bit on the 25PDVC you mentioned, but it will still come with a full factory warranty and free shipping. And I can personally vouch for this company, as I bought my stove from them (as have quite a few other forum members)....nice people to work with.

I think it would be a good stove for your intended use:

You can't go wrong with a Harman, you get what you pay for.

My only problem with the Harman is that it's a manual light. Would like something easy where the wife or kids can turn on/off if I'm not home. That's the biggest negative for that model.

Hey Doggie

I was in a situation similar to yours. We have a P68 Harman which does a great job; we had it installed in the best overall spot; but it didn't quite get the heat to the room where we spend a lot of time. It would keep the room at 66 or 67, and we would turn the oil heat on to raise the temperature a few degrees. This year I decided to get a smaller Harmon P43 to supplement and cut out the oil man. Coincidently a friend of mine was getting out of pellet burning and selling his P38 for $500. I balked at it because of the manual ignition; but to sweeten the deal he threw in a generator. I couldn't refuse, I figured at worse I could sell it to get my money back.

I am very happy with it, and to be honest with you, lighting it is a piece of cake, all of 30 seconds. Clean burn pot, turn on fan, put in some pellets, light with propane torch, shut the door. That's it! As for lighting it, I'm sure your wife can and if your kids are older and responsible they should be able to do it. I also have it hooked up to a thermostat.

My vote P38!!

hotdawg, its probably too late to chime in but thought I would.

I have a Jamestown J1000 Manual light in a room with similar heat loss as to what you have, and can attest to its heat ability. I also like how small it is. Yes, the manual light is a bummer, but because of the burn pot design it could run almost forever not needing burn pot scraping.

I also have an Englander 25PDVC as sold by Andy at AM/FM stoves. Think I got it for $860, and have not idea why it was refurbished other than a small ding you'd never notice. I love the auto light my 10 year old can do it, their factory support is top notch, but it is a bulky stove compared to the J1000, and you have to scrap the burn pot.

If I had my druthers I'd probably go with a new J1000 with auto light. Since it is a self cleaning burn pot you could probably put it on a tstat, set and forget (expect for filling with pellets).

Hope this helps.

im kind of in the same boat but would like to go with an insert. how much is the jamestown? can the englander be configured as an insert?

Yep, that's a great price. NOTE: The free shipping is to a loading dock in your area. For an additional $50 (I think), you can have it delivered to your doorstep.

AM/FM Energy was great to do business with.

Yes, it is an Englander. They re-badge their products for Lowes and Home Depot.

Great price, but I now correctly recall what I paid and it was $760; just a tad lower than what Andy is asking. But I had to fight bids in August on ebay to get that. Glad to see he has turned it into a full fledged business.

imacman is correct: shipping is not to your home, but rather a nearby shipping company. That may be the reason he is able to offer free shipping for something obviously quite bulky and heavy. If you can borrow a buddy's trailer or pickup truck and a loading dolly you are all set. When I arrived for pickup the company was all too happy to carefully load it with forklift into the bed of my pickup.

It was likewise a pleasure to deal with him. I would not hesitate to do it again as the price was great, and Englander support is best of breed.

Don't forget your cost does not stop there. You will still need vent pipe. After a bad experience with DuraVent I would never buy anything but ICC Excel Pipe. It is the first and last pipe you are ever likely to buy.

I agree with Harman Lover 007. I have only used and worked on three different stoves, Us Stove 6041 (which I own), Englander 25-PDVC, and a Harman P-38. The Harman P-38's functional ash draw is worth its weight in gold, and the amount of heat it gives vs its size is amazing. Don't get me wrong I love my US Stove, for the price it has served me well, but my next stove will be a Harman P-38.

So, if you look at my sig you'll see which stove I ended going with, Avalon Newport. Wasn't even in the radar but we absolutely love it! It's an amazing little stove and kicks out some serious heat! We're using it to heat a 24x24 familyroom with cathedral ceilings and too many windows to count burning shoulder pellets (Bayou Hardwood) on lowest setting. The room gets tropical within the hour and then just becomes uncomfortable! As much as we love the Jamestown this Avalon is kicking some serious butt with heat output and it's very quiet compared to the Jamestown. So far it's burned everything I've dumped into it. The only difference I've noticed is the BTU and amount of ash based on the quality of pellets. The glass stays clean for days and burn pot requires zero scraping all week. Or course I never let it go longer then 3 days without cleaning something. The Jamestown stove I have to tinker with damper control and auger trim every day to get the perfect burn. I have to clean out the burn pot at least once a day and scrape it at least once a week currently burning Spruce Pointes. The glass gets dirty within 12 hours of beginning burn time. That said, it produces a crazy amount of heat. With running that one stove, temps outside above 30, inside is 72 that's both downstairs and upstairs. When temps are below 30 temps inside range from 68-70. That's pretty good heating a 2800+ sq ft colonial! Did I mention I haven't turned on the oil furnace since the stove was installed in November??

I'm a huge advocate for pellet stoves! IMO, doesn't matter what you get, JUST GET IT! Get what you can afford and you'll love the heat! No idea why it took us this long to join the bandwagon but when we finish our basement, we're going to get a third stove to heat it!

Hotdawg,

I've owned a P-38 and it was a great stove. I lost it in a house fire and replaced it with a P-43.

The only difference between the P-38 and P-43 is that the p-43 has an ignitor. If you want that, then go with the P-43. If not, save yourself about $400 and go with the P-38.

I have both the P-38 and the 25 PDVC so I`m gonna weigh in here. The P-38 is a more efficient stove , gives the user better control over the fire , is a bit quieter, produces more heat per lb of fuel . and is more durable and dependable ,. That said , it does cost nearly double the price of a 25 PDVC so you SHOULD be getting more stove.
If you need a stove for just supplementing your other one , the PDVC will be quite satisfactory and could very well give you the best bang for the buck. And you would get Englander service is free for life and unequalled.
