If there were posts from Jotul owners bragging about good looks, I would read every one and agree. But I was asking a question, if you notice. I asked if anyone else has had a similar experience with softer wood, this question was directed at BK owners. So, this thread has done exactly what I intended, to get BK owners to give there experience, so if that's redundant, so be it.

I want the best of both worlds. The looks of a Jotul (wrapping a welded steel stove of course) and the inside guts and performance of a BK. The PE alderlea series is close but a non-cat and I ain't making that mistake again!
Here's a nice thought on threads that you think are stupid. If you don't have anything nice (at least constructive) to say then don't say anything at all. In other words, quitchyurbichin. It's not a freedom argument, it is a courtesy argument.

I don't really have envy over the BK's burn times because I don't like how they look and I know to have the BK burn times I'd need to have the BK's looks. Plus I LOVE my stove's clearances and the fact that when a friend came over with his 4 yo and she accidently touched the side after it had been burning for a few days straight, she didn't burn herself. And even if it's a plain looking box, I like how it looks. And that I didn't need to go all out on all kinds of hearth pad protection for it-the stones just get warm to the touch, no matter how long it's been burning. Plus my burn times really aren't too bad, for a regular ole tube stove with a 2.2 (or so I think) cu firebox. We can pack it in the AM with two splits and a few ecobricks and have coals in the evening to restart from, and a warm Cottage (10-11 hours).
Now, if I could have everything I love about my stove with the bk's burn times and missed out on THAT stove...then I would have envy (and, maybe a new stove, lol).
I just like reading about other stoves. I'm an addict. What can I say?

The Ultra clearances are pretty decent although not as good as your Lopi. I'm lucky enough to have a non combustible wall behind the stove so I have the stove 6 inches off the wall. The side is shielded the same as the Lopi I can touch the side any time I want without getting burned, the hearth only requires ember protection which is the same as the Lopi stoves.
You mention the stove is in a cottage so I assume it's not your full time residence, in that situation I'd lean towards a non cat stove since I'd like to enjoy a nice view of the fire when I was there.

Nope, the Cottage will be our full time residence. Because it was a summer cottage, it's been neglected for quite a few years and we're still doing work to make it 100% livable. We're keeping the old house for projects that we just can't live through (like when we renoed the living room, which required ripping the floors out, including the joists, and replacing the sills and joists). We've still got the floors in the rest of it to do, although those are on a slab (hopefully) so we are figuring the soft spots are just bad subflooring that we can replace (the living room is an addition and is just cinderblock foundation with dirt below the floor). That project will send us back to the Old House, since it will nvolve the dining room, kitchen, hall and bedroom and will probably include demoing a really poorly built wall between the bedroom and hall. The stove is on the back wall of the living room, so it's basically the centerpiece of the room-and if you look into the Cottage from the front door, you see through the dining room down the hall and the stove is right there on the back wall). There's NO way I'd want a stove that I couldn't enjoy the fire in-which is one of many reasons we sold the old Fisher that came with it
-I spent YEARS waiting for a wood stove and wishing my DV units were wood not gas (although the Berkshire is a pretty nice stove), makes me smile every time I fire it up.30 hours on one load of any wood, let alone maple, is just nucking futs. I wish I had bought a Blaze King :-((

Hey Weby where you located in southern Indiana as you can see I am a fellow Hoosier who also owns a blaze king. With the weather we have been having I have been doing small loads and getting long burns. We have been having highs from the 40's to 60's here lately,hard to justify burning
