Burning Hunk
I know that this has been talked about here many times before......i just thought I would add my 10 cents! The new Okies from the Upton bagging facility are a pleasant surprise. I have been burning them since the begining of the northeast shipments when they were in the clear bag with the pine tree design ( purchased @ BJ's in Tilton, N.H. to boot!).......and I must say the quality factor has been kicked up more than a few notches! :) Like others here, I was always dismayed at the amount of dust, fines and broken pieces in the bags. Not to mention the weak, rip-prone bags. These new "packaged in the USA" ones are a different breed altogether. VERY low fines, minimal to no dust and a super strong bag are my first impressions. And NO....they don't smell like cat pee or any other weird scent described here over the years. :cheese: WhenI poured the first bag into the hopper there was NO cloud of choking dust. The bulk-rail and re-screening process is definitely working for the best. I will purchase more based on this first experience. Nice , strong bags.....you could package crushed stone in these things! :) No more worries about ripping bags while re-stacking your stash. As I write this they are burning in the background and are just as hot and clean as ever( if not more so!) No more'' fines fireworks show" in the Accentra. Great job Viridis Energy, and thank you for listening to the customers Mr. Middleton. And thank you Steve@ Long Pond for the test bags to try out!

Because of people like you, I was inspired to buy a ton and count my total bags today. I found out I was just short of 5 tons. My misery was lessoned by my purchase of Somersets for cheap today, $175 a ton. Now, I am thinking spiring buy or the collect a ton aproach by buying 15 bags here and there. Anyways, how do the Somersets compare to the Barefoot or even the Okies? While I can't get the same brands, I am interested in the comparisons none-the-less.
Thanks

WOW.....I can't believe that I inspire anyone! :) If I could get Somersets for $175/ton I might just re-mortgage the house and go for broke! :bug: The Somersets (in MY opinion, burn just as hot as Barefoots(if not hotter) and have less clumpy ash. Somersets and Okies are close, but have different properties altogether. They are both awesome and keep me warm. It's all about individual stove preference. They are both fine pellets in their own right.

Somersets are my favorite pellet. But local Okies could rule. This is good news.
Where do you get Somersets in Mass.????

Last year I found them sporadically at two different Lowes, Danvers and Woburn. I bought what I could fit in the vehicle when I saw them. This year, nada.

Somersets are hard to come by this season. Lack of fiber! The dealers that have them shipped in were also out. But they are getting some shipments. LLP was supposed to get some in late December early January. Not sure what they have left or when the next shipments if any will roll in.

Hopefully they sell lots of flooring this summer or figure out how to chip logs to make pellets!

Lp pellets seems to be getting in a constant stream of them. Last Saturday morning they just received a trailer load before I got there.....but I believe they were already spoken for. If you want some from them you'll need to get on "The List". They are good people......get on the list and purchase away! :)

It took me all season thus far to find a deal like this + I had to go through the hassle of price matching. Lets just say big box store is where you can score deals like this. I have checked with every big box store every couple of weeks all winter. Got lucky this time.

Yes, his name is Steve.....and I'm heading down there in about 20 mins. to pick up my new GMG Daniel Boone. :) And possibly some Platinum Fires too!!

Dont go to the Upton plant, I stopped in just to get a bag or so and the manager could not have been any ruder, Asked if I had a 40 ft flat bed trailer attached to my pick up truck. I understand they are not a sales store but no reason to be rude. I just figured he would say try a couple of bags ( wasnt looking to get them for free ) let me know what you think and here is were you can get them.

NO reason to be rude at all! But I think you need to be a dealer to get anything out of there.

Nice job on the Daniel Boone Branson! From everything ive read they are the best value for the money and the controller is supposed to be fantastic. I hope youre picking up that awesome winter blanket cover for it too. As soon as i can squirrel away enough cash my Traeger is going on craigslist and im heading down there to pick one up too!

You just wake up? Yes, They have been bagging the Okies since mid December. They are also bagging the Platinum fires too! Platinums got rolling in late August/early September.

It's ironic that I cam across this post today. Three weeks ago I purchases 2 bags of Oakies from a retailer in Mendon Ma. I tried them them out and I loved them. The Oakies had no crap in the bags, no fines and were some of the cleanest pellets I had seen. I burned them and liked them and these are probably what I was going to buy. I then found that Oakies and New England Pellets were the same prices so I got a few bags of New England pellets to try out. I like the NEP as well, seemed to have the same heat and same ash and were very clean. Since I have a hard time committing to a ton I decided to try the Oakies one more time before making my final decision. I went to the same place in Mendon and got 3 bags. These Oakies were TERRIBLE. The bags were FULL of sawdust and fines, as I poured them out there was a cloud of dust and there were TONS of fines, it's as if I can see more fines than pellets. These were the worse bag of pellets I had ever bought. Was very disappointing. So, now I'm stuck, if they're going to look like this...no thanks on the Oakies. Bag is the same as the OP pic, I tried posting a pic of all the crap in the bag but after 20 minutes of playing with the pic settings and " Images must not exceed yada yada yada" I gave up!

If there's that much dust and crap in the bag? Its most likely they got wet. Not the fault of the mill, But the fault of the pellet dealer.
