We bought a freestanding Quadrafire Classic Bay 1200, and it sits in front of our prefab insert.

The Chimney is about 35ft tall, I wish I could just punch a hole out the back and vent it right there, but I doubt that would meet code. The installation is about 1500 including the new liner. They are doing a quote for me now. The insert they are pressing me on is the Mt Vernon by Quadra-Fire.

You can do what 1Dtml did above..... Or Rip the entire Pre Fab out, and just put a Freestanding there on a Hearth Pad you built? Then you could vent straight out the back, or rebuild a new Zero Clearance box and vent out like 1Dtml did.....

Joe-pinehill- Did you vent all the way up the pre fab chimney? If so, did you seal the old damper area? And if so, with what?

With 5000 sq feet, you are going to need a very efficient heating system and be well insulated. That much space puts you at the two to three stove level. Could you consider just leaving the fireplace alone and install a free standing stove? There are so many options open to you. Download a manual on a few you might like the looks and price of an you will find options for Installation.
Remember, the Harman is nice, but it isn't the only nice stove and there are many more affordable stoves out there.

Can anyone recommend some similar inserts? I don't even know where to start, but the hotter the better. I know I will never heat the entire house with it, but to supplement the furnance will help with the propane bill and also keep the heat pump off.
