I'm a life long Giant fan so I needed a project to keep me occupied until kickoff. Decided today was the day to build a new HH. Took some pictures along the way.

Started with a pallet base - actually 2 pallets high, 7 foot square:

Put down the perimeter:

I put a Super Bowl preview section out of todays newspaper and a note about the wood in a ziplock bag:

About 1/3 of the way done....

Placed my ziplock bag in the middle of the HH - should be fun a few years when I find it!

The finished HH: 7 foot diameter, approx 8' high in the center, wall about 5'6". I figure about 1.8 cord

looks great! What a great way to kill time. BTW I cannot stand New England, Hope the Giants stomp their a$$. Its going to suck when you have to tear down the HH to put in tomorrows newspaper reading "Giants CRUSH New England in SuperBowl ! "

Nice job GW.....looks great, and thats cool how you put a time capsule in the middle of it. I hope the Giants crush Tom Baby (I mean Brady)....

Good way to spend the day.
I'm curious if you've ever done one with the doubled pallet base before? I can see the benefit of more air-flow underneath, but...(I kinda hate to say this)...I'm thinking that Holz is at the mercy of Jack Frost & Johnny Gravity. Hope it makes it 'till burn-time, but I'd keep a close eye on it next spring (assuming we actually have a winter next year).

That's cool GW. Time capsule is a neat idea as well. I must remind you Tom Brady is a Michigan man and everybody knows you don't mess with wolverine's! Pats win, no problem.:)

Actually, I just finished burning a previous one on the same base.....so its settled in nicely. My bigger concern is when I finished and stepped back to look at it I have a couple spots near the top where it bulges out. the pieces are angled in so I'm not sure how it hold up. Time will tell.

i hope lighting strikes your HH and burns it up :p

kidding ;)

Nice HH. Mine is on hold. Not enough wood to continue building :(.

I had a huge pile of splits from the October storm scrounges waiting for space to be freed up. Still have about 2 cords in a pile. That storm was a gold mine!

I thought I would add - I dont understand the math or logic that states that a HH allows more wood on a foot print. The HH I made calculates to approx 1.8 cords. I would be hard pressed to get any more wood on that. Now if I took that same 7x7 footprint and stacked in a "block" I could go 5' tall (7x7x5) and get 1.9 cord on the same footprint. Essentially the same.

I think you have a little over 2 cords. The volume of a cylinder is height x 3.1415 x radius square. You have about 2.4 cords.

I re did the math .... figuring it is a cylnder and a cone on top. I figured it was the cylinder is 5'6" tall (5.5 x 3.1415 x 3.5(2)) = 211.66 / 128 = 1.65

then the cone ((pi x radius square x height) / 3)
height of the cone is 2.5 (8' - 5'6")
((3.1415 x 3.5(2) * 3) / 2.5)) = 32.07 / 128 = .25

1.65 + .25 = 1.9 cords

I think I got that right.... but its been a long day and the mind is a little worn.

The HH may not save much space compared to the "block" but the HH is a lot better looking.

Agreed, which is why I did it - adds character to my Woodland. I was just making the point about the "myth" of a HH being able to get more on a foot print. The arguement is you can stack higher with a HH - I cant see realistically going much higher than I did. Even with the 8' center I could barely get the wood up there in any organized manor.

Well its 3 years later and I worked my way down to the bottom of the HH and found this:
