I'm also looking at possibly using their fireplace insert (1400). I have a question though. Just downloaded the manual and it shows the new SS flue (which I plan on installing), going up the chimney but it also shows air space all around the flue? !

Can't you seal this off with insulation or something to prevent heat going up the chimney?

Or a steel plate around the flue to seal it off? Or is that a bad idea?

I completely removed my damper so there is a very large opening up there.

There should be a block-off plate at the top of the fireplace where it narrows into the chimney. The S/S flue passes thru the block-off.

Good -- that's what I thought, believe it or not they don't show or even mention it in the manual. Pretty sure I'm getting this -- just don't have the floorspace.

Wonder how much heat I'm sacrificing using an insert rather than a stove? I know it depends on what models I'm comparing but it seems with the right blower you should be able to get a lot of heat into the room.

You will get somewhat less heat with the insert than a stove, but the blower makes up a lot of the difference.

In addition of the block off plate, use Roxul/rock wool or other fire proof material to insulate around the insert.

That way the radiant heat will not be sucked in the masonry. Make sure to leave a 1" air gap around the insert ( no insulation touching the insert). The principle is to let the radiant heat warm up the insulation which in turn will heat up the surrounding air thereby increasing internal insert temps and eventually return heat in the room.
