This warm weather has got me all screwed up. I have been burning so little wood that I don't have room in my stacks for the wood that I scrounged in the fall. I don't have any more room on my 1/4 acre for more stacks either. I have rounds stacked on the lawn and in front of next year's wood. I was hoping to split them and fill in the stack as I burned this winter, but now my 2014/2015 wood has caught up to my 2011/2012 wood.

I know, I should keep problems like this to myself. I don't expect much sympathy. I wanted to do some splitting on my day off today, but I'll have to wait until I have room to stack. I don't want to make a pile of splits that I'll have to stack later. I worked on my new to me tractor instead.

Well... I have acres upon acres so if I want to stack outside, there are countless places I could do it. Only problem is the wife wants them out of sight so that means I have to tame some of the wild so that I can mow around the stacks. I think what I will do is to spread all the saw chips, bark, and splitter trash over the new stacking area to keep the tall grass down.

As for my shed, the way I built it, the last in is the first out but I do have two bays. It seems though that I seldom empty a bay completely so I either trap old wood behind new, or end up moving and stacking it again on the other side. This year I used so little wood that I'd have to move 2 cord or not put anymore wood in the shed next Fall. I guess I will have 10 cord laid up outside over the upcoming Summer, Winter, and Summer to follow. Looks like I need to scrounge up more pallets.

Similar problem here, to what Steve's seeing. Gridlock with where to store stacks once split and stacks awaiting splitting. Good problem.

Not to mention lumber waiting "in the field" both to have wetlands revert to normal dry, and to have space to stack & process @ home. Fortunately, there are months available to get it done, and no rush is possible with the red oak, anyhow.

I am in no hurry, but I do want to start cleaning up soon. I am looking forward to taking a summer off. I won't have to start scrounging again until fall this year.

Same issue here. The October storm was a scroungers gold mine - I grabbed all I could while it was available. Then in December I got to splitting it all and making a huge heaping pile in and around my stacks. As I empty a slot I stack. With this warm weather I think I am going to have to add to my foot print or leave it heaped until next winter. I wanted to get it all split though so seasoning could begin.
Good problem to have!

I got a friend in Ossining that might help take a little bit of that off your lot ;-)

Beautiful thing there.
I'm sure you'll figure something out. That kind of problem just needs a few months not running a saw or doing any splitting,
the /need/want for the smell of the saw & fresh sawed wood, sound of a fine running saw, splits adding up you'll get more room some how. LOL :)

NEWS Headline::::"Mild winter cause wood burners/cutters to have "chainsaw withdrawal" symptoms"

LOL LOL
"Neighbors concerns grow, as large wood piles dominate the landscape" "City steps in with free counseling sessions, chainsaw audio cds & fresh cut wood fragrances "

Yep; no sympathy :) :)

NO PROBLEM Flatbedford, just send all your surplus wood to me! :cheese: Seriously, I know what you mean, I am running out of room. Weird winter!

Thats a good problem! Now just stack it a little higher!

If I run out of room it would be because I just deforrested Northern Illinois. You fellas with storage size limits ever consider a Holzhausen? Lots of wood in a small footprint (because you can typically go taller).

But I am short! :snake:

yeah - get it split anyway and see if you can stack higher.

I've got plenty of room - so I don't have the same issue. I will say I moved 5.6 cords of wood into my garage to get me thru this winter. 4/5ths of it is STILL here! My wife and I laughed the other day at the thought of having to move it back out of the garage. I've never needed to do this before. NEVER. I thought I had a good handle on my usage and needs. I never thought winter wouldn't show up for us this year. I keep checking the long range forecasts - and Still NO winter weather. It's like spring here. Saw robins already and song birds are calling their mates. Many days - I don't even throw on a coat.

I guess at the end of March - I'll move it all back out to the stacks.

Same story down here. I've burned 1.5 - 1.75 cords each of the past two years and have hardly burned a 1/2 cord YTD. All my Azeleas are blooming and the stoves has been cold for two weeks. In January I used a total of 466 kw hours, ($69.95) my lowest monthly usage EVER! Not Complaining

We've got ours stashed at both houses for now, and I'm thinking we're just going to split and stack what's at the Old House and leave it there to season until we figure out more space. The problem is, we started a smallish scrounge pile in an out of site spot thinking we would build our racks/shed nearby in the spring and just stack in it as we split what was in that pile. Now that we've had a few good scrounges, the wood pile is where the racks were supposed to go!! We're going to have to split it and toss it into another pile to move it, then build either racks or a shed and move it back. Lol.

Steve, I have a great suggestion that will solve part of your problem. That is, I need to get some wood split. In the picture below you see part of this year's splitting stack. That has grown a bit (6+ rows, 16' long and 5' high) so will take several hours to do the splitting. In the background, on the left you can see some of the wood that was split last year. To the right (way back) are some more stacks and that is what we cut 2 years ago. We have another stack that was split in 2009. We still have plenty of room so when you come out to help with the splitting, just bring some of that extra oak with you. I'll buy some beer too to keep you hydrated.

Will you cover the gas for the old Ford @ 7mpg? What are you about 1800 miles or so?..or 3600 round trip. That would be about $2000 worth of free wood. Can I at least split it vertical out at your place?

Okay. I'll buy a case of beer then.
