Is there any danger of causing harm to you saw noodling?

Not really. Don't try to force the cut. Make sure you have a good sharp chain and all should be fine. I noodle almost all my big rounds into manageable sizes.

what is noodle if you dont mind me asking?

Its when you cut your spaghetti down to size. :cheese:

Laying logs down & cutting with the grain, along the length of the piece.Produces large amount of long stringy shavings(that resemble spaghetti or spaetzle noodles) quite quickly.Keep your chain extra sharp & watch so clutch & sprocket dont get jammed up & you'll be fine.

I just called it ripping for over 25 yrs, never heard the term 'noodling' until I joined up here.

Somebody has to have a picture??
It's when you cut a round in half with your chain saw, cutting with the wood grain. You make long, noodle looking wood chips.
Rounds to big to handle or one that just won't split.
Sometimes it jams up the saw & makes a big pile of noodles :)

Depends mainly on how well the clutch cover clears the noodles. Some let them exit easily, others clog up quickly. When things clog up, the noodles can get jammed into places like the bar groove and the clutch. Can be difficult to open a path around the chain.

You DON'T have to noodle all the way through. You can use a couple-inch noodled groove as a starter for wedges. Saves a lot of cleanup of noodles, too.

Got it. I have done that befor but never had a name for it. I helped take down some 35"-45" willow and did that to load it on this guys truck. Had to 1/4 it up to pick it up.

Yes. As mentioned, it produces a lot of material fast and can get dragged back into the clutch and sprocket area. It can also clog the oil journal and carry into the nose sprocket bearing.

Makes great fire starter. Let it dry in the sun for day or 2 while fluffing a few times.

If you search "noodling with the craftsman" you will find an old post of mine with some pics.
I would link it or post it here but I don't know how.
Any help with linking an old post or thread would be appreciated. Thanks.

I thought" noodling" was grabbing catfish.

I could see a steeltowner trying that with a chainsaw. I grew up catching them in the yough and monongahela dodging barges. (with an old zebco, though..)

I do alot of noodling on crooked and large wood but, have a real problem with the clutch getting stalled. I wonder if extending the clutch cover in some way would stop the clogging.? Has anyone tried this?
Mike

How many people do this if the saw doesn't reach across the round? Kickback dangers?

No danger at all. In fact I do that all the time. If I have a really big round to move I'll make 2-3 cuts from the end first, roll 90 degrees and make 2 more. That way when you cut to length 9 pieces you can pick up fall off.

Got to do what you got to do. Rounds dropping in at over 600lbs its noodle time.

This is what I call noodling. While at the lake with some friends I hit a few rocks and caught these 2. Of course that was 10 years or more back.
