I have an older 20ton husky splitter with a 5HP Tecumseh that is leaking oil. I took it apart and found the oil was coming from around the breather. After replacing the breather it still leaks. The tube to the carb is clear and it is not overfilled with oil. Any ideas?

Your probably getting blow back from the crank case. Sounds like rings and valve guides are on the repair list.

No loss of compression and no smoke. The plug is clean. Starts on second pull every time. I will run an actual compression test to see if it bleeds off.

Something is pressurizing the breather, or allowing oil to get where it shouldn't be. It is one of those two things. Is there a missing microscreen or something?? Dunno. The most common failure that I have seen cause this is engine blow by.

What about the head gasket? Possible to get blow by because of a bad head gasket?

Yes.

Make sure the breather hose is clear. Was the gasket replaced as well?

Yes. If the gasket has blown between the jug and the valves - if you have loose valve guides it can pressurize the crank case.

I am with Jags on this.

Take out the plug, put it on TDC and apply compressed air. Listen for where the air goes. If its blowing into the crank case violently then either the rings are shot or you have a head gasket leak. If it comes out the exhaust its the exhaust valve and out the carb its the intake valve.

5 HP Tecumseh is a valve-in-block flat-head design. Head gasket can only leak to atmosphere. ;-)

Thanks for confirming. For a bit I thought maybe my pain killers were making me lose more brain cells or something! I did go to school for auto tech, of course that doesn't mean I'm a pro or anything.

Nope. Leaks would be to atmosphere with a flathead. OHV is a different animal.

My #1 suspect would be worn bore, and thus leakage at bore/rings. Lots of those one-lungers had mild steel liners- soft and easily worn. The rings weren't the very best available, either.

Sorry Nate - Didn't realize that this was what it was.

Edit - wait a minute, I am confusing myself (which is not hard to do). Yeah, bad Jags - Pay no attention to the man behind the curtains. Crap.

But I still think ya got wear in jug or valves causing this. That I am 51% sure about. :shut:
