Greetings Fellow Hearthlings,

When I get up in the morning and the Woodstock Fireview stove top temp is at around 250 can I open the damper all the way while leaving the combustor engaged?

I tried just that and the stove top temp went up to 300 degrees?

Thanks,

Jim

The manual says not to have a fire with the cat engaged and the damper wide open. I think the concern is flames getting into the cat and damaging it.

Thanks for the reply. There are no flames. In the morning after an all night burn the fire is all but dead. I revived it by opening the damper all the way. This did not create any flames per se greater that 1 - 2 inches in length. It only increased the stove top temp to 300 degrees and kept me from reloading the stove for a couple of more hours, plus it reduced the size of the ash pile in the stove.

I would think you'd be OK then but I would wait to hear from far more experienced burners of the Fireview.

No harm in that. I do it just about every morning to revive the coals and get it ready for the next load.

Jim, there is no good reason to disengage that cat until you reload. If you tried to bypass the cat you would simply lose a lot of heat right up the chimney and I doubt you are trying to heat the outdoors.

btw, if we are near the stove, just before the burn reaches the all coal stage, we set the draft to full open. This will burn those coals down and give you good heat.

Enjoy.

Yep as above, keeps the cat in a good zone for a reload. Ive found it to be a bit faster to then re-engage afterwards.

Since one can't open the bypass damper AND leave the cat engaged, I assume you're saying that you opened the primary air inlet all the way.
