Last season I went through three igniter's on my Mount Vernon. I was able to contact someone by phone at Quadrafire who told me that the reason for the igniter failure was the brand of pellets, cleaning, and to change to a utility setting. I clean the whole stove weekly so I didn't agree but ok. So this season I ordered two igniter's, changed the pellets, and I am still cleaning it weekly. Last week another I had another igniter failure, so I changed it with the spare. So last week I emailed Quadrafire again with this issue and guess what NO RESPONSE. I contacted the dealer regarding this issue last year and they have no idea why this is happening and were no help other than selling me another igniter. When I replace the igniter the wire are right where Quadrafire reccomends to run them. As I am writing this I wonder if there is a faulty tranformer but does anyone have any ideas?

What settings are you using?

What year is the stove?

Do you have the upgraded firepot? It helps ignitor life.

I run the stove on Manual with a flame hight setting of -5, and it is set to softwood pellet.

The stove was manufactured in March of 2008 and installed new in July of 2008

No, is this a warranty item and what year stoves must upgrade the burn pot?

Wow, that tech had no idea what they were talking about. LOL. The reason for the short ignitor life is that when this stove was designed, quadrafire set it up be able to burn corn(I.E. light corn).

They have since, redesigned the burn pot to allow more air relief to the ignitor and to allow the fuel to touch the ignitor so it would still light corn. I have these listed on ebay part # srv7034-072. These come with a replacement ignitor as well.

This seems to help the ignitors last quite a bit longer. The next step is Quad has a 300 watt ignitor coming out but just for pellets (other fuels will still require the 350 watt version) We are still waiting for this one to be available.

Hope this helps

What year did they change the burn pot? My stove has a build date of 7/2009. I'm still on the original igniter.

Hi -
I've just gone through my third igniter in just over a year. The local dealer is out because apparently there has been a run on the new lower voltage igniters and he can't get more until the end of March. Luckily I've found one an hour away. Does anyone have more info on what is happening with this? We wanted to buy a second one to have a spare.

Also, a post on this thread mentioned the replacement burn pot in relation to igniter problems, but never mentioned the year that revision occurred. We bought our stove in August 2008. Should we also be looking into a new burn pot? Or will the new igniter eliminate the need to change the burn pot?

Thanks folks - this forum is great!

A 2008 stove will not have the updated pot.

Next time my ignitor fails I will upgrade or modify my pot.

My Mount Vernon insert is a 2008 model and I did take the advice on the burn pot upgrade. Since I installed the replacement burn pot there have been no issues with the igniter. I still need to oder a back up igniter just in case, but I am waiting on the availability of the lower voltage igniter. If you still havn't replaced the burnpot I would suggest that you do so soon. The burn pot that I ordered came with a new igniter. If you change it now rather than wait for the igniter to fail, you will have a spare.

There was a thread on here last week titled Question for quad techs on MT Vernon stoves. I think it was the poster maglite, that had a few different reasons pertaining to the correct installation and stuff about the ignitors. You might find this helpful also.I myself am going to have a tech come, and change the fuel table settings on 1 of my stoves.I have had problems with ignitors on my newer (2009) stove.

Thanks. I had somehow missed that thread - it was a great posting as you said. The bad news was that I could be the poster child for all that was listed as "If your setup is like this, it's wrong!" Looks like the local service tech will be able to afford that new boat this year when he gets done with me.

Speaking of which - can anyone tell me if changing the burn pot to the improved version a DYI project? The service dude coulda had that new boat already if he hadn't convinced me to replace that first (of many) igniter myself.

I think it is.

But I don't know your ability.

I have a parts explosion of the firebox area.

But its the wrong type of file and I'm not smart enough to convert it so it will post.

They new burn put is VERY MUCH a DIY project. It is very easy. Remove ash pan, remove igniter, open front door and remove 2 screws that hold the burn pot in place. They 1 screw also holds the thermocupler in place. Bend thermocupler up out of the way. Be gentle with it though. Left pot up and out....you may need to remove your baffle plate to give you more working room. Repeat steps in reverse to install new pot.

Great! I guess the service dude is fishing from shore for another year. Now to find a new pot that has the new igniter as well. Anybody have one???

I bought mine from my local dealer for 84.00 dollars. It included igniter in the box along with a gasket for the burn pot. New bolts and screws for igniter. I reused the old bolts though.

Wish I had a dealer like that near me. I Haven't asked locally 'cause I'm afraid of the answer. The one pot on E-bay doesn't mention the igniter, and it's listed at about $120. Anybody have a good source for the whole package for a decent price (like maybe $84???) on a Mt Vernon AE Insert?

That's cause Quadrafire raised the price and took away the igniter. They are costing the dealers more not (about double of what they did before.
