I am trying to get our floor in, a roof on rebuild our back porch AND buy the wood stove BEFORE the year is up to get the tax credit.. sigh....

I am not sure if it is worth rushing the stove purchase just because of the tax credit. To my knowledge, it is now down to $500 and only if you have not claimed it in the years before. Given all your renovations with your new home, beefing up the insulation or putting a storm door in may be easier to accomplish in such a short time and give you an immediate payback.

yeah.. I hear ya..

I think that i know what we want to get now. I am actually probably leaning towards the Englander... I should have got this back in the summer... but ...

We have some wood ... we might have to augment this season..

but we do need it for the large space.. right now we are using a portable oil heater... so .. it is kind of a necessity...

Hi Caelidh, I will chime in since I just bought a Drolet Myriad about a month ago. It also came down to the 30 or the Myriad. After much research I pretty much came to the decision that they looked to be fairly comparable stoves. Since Mike (stoveguy) and Bert (fyrebug) are both on here I took that into account narrowing it down to the Drolet or Englander. I have had it installed for about a month and have been extremely pleased with the stove. The only things that pushed us to pick the Myriad was: 1) We liked the flat top slightly more than the step top. 2) As an amateur I liked the idea of the solid stainless top in the firebox for the secondaries so I don't have to worry about hitting the baffle board in the top of the firebox. 3) I also liked it has the bypass in the rear which is nice on start ups.

I have been intending on doing a review of the stove as soon as I have time but as a quick response since there is not a lot of information on hearth about this stove I will say I am very happy with it so far. I don't really have any negatives to say about it . I am still in the learning curve with it but coming around real fast. I just re lit it off of coals today after 16 hours. It really likes to crank the heat. I had it cruising between 500 and 600 for 8 hours on a load of cherry and black locust with secondaries sustained for over 4 hours. If you have any questions just ask and I will try to answer any I can.

Btw thanks to all the great members on Hearth on getting this newbie on the right track from the start!

Thanks for the input. Yes.. I saw the Drolet on a You Tube review (That would be a great place to do more reviews on stoves from customers).

I did like the flat top on that model as well. The guy who reviewed it was from TX... I am from Ohio.. so.. I don't know what his winters are like. I think what is ending up encouraging me now to lean more to the ENglander is the price.. as well as the support that folks say is actually good... it also has a wee bit bigger firebox. It also aesthetically looks better with the legs.. (again.. that isn't as much of a concern for me personally.. )

I still haven't made my final decision.. so thanks again for the input... Good luck with your stove..

I actually wish I had found this forum earlier....

If you like the 'legs look' you may want to look at the Drolet Legend. Same firebox as the Myriad. Some etailer such as DynamiteBuys http://www.dynamitebuys.com/store/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=1078 Call Shawn and tell him Bert sent you and he may be able to sweeten the offer.

There may be some Farm Stores in your area that also carry it.

And you are right, there is nothing on the web quite as good for wood burners as Hearth.com. Wealth of friendly knowledge to be had for free!

Just a quick couple thoughts as I am drinking my coffee since I just went down this same road. I think since you are over in Ohio check Menards for a price on the Drolet. It was free shipping to the store and showed up 3 days after I ordered it. The Drolet was a couple hundred cheaper than the Englander since I missed the HD deal. If you like the legs better look at the Austral. FyreBug can correct me if I'm wrong but I believe it is the same as the Myriad but with legs instead. As far as I can tell the Baltic/Legend are the same but with side shields.

Also check the clearance to combustibles and the hearth protection for both stoves as they are different and may sway your decision if either pose any issues. I was lucky that mine was from scratch and on a slab floor so the clearances were not an issue. The Drolet was cheaper without the shields but more with the shields. Also I believe the Englander requires a R1.5 hearth and the Drolet is non combustible floor protection only.

Two things also with the fire boxes. According to the fire brick layouts the Englander is about 19.5" wide by 18.75" deep where as the Drolet is 18" wide by 20" deep so I would say they are very comparable. One other thing is the "dog house" primary air in the front of the firebox on the Drolet runs all the way across the front. It seems to burn pretty much completely even all the way across the width of the firebox. This actually was something I was unaware of until I actually got the stove. Just differences between them. I definitely don't think you can go wrong with either stove.

The following 4 stoves have the same firebox http://www.drolet.ca/en/products/wood/stoves/large you can see their specs on each one.

Requirement for hearth protection is the same for all wood stoves regardless of brand.

This firebox internal dimensions are: Depth 21 5/16, Width 18 1/2, Height 14 5/16

Hope this helps

Firebox sizes and my math:
Baltic (21.3125x18.5x14.3125)=3.27cu ft
Austral (21.3125x18.5x14.375)=3.28cu ft
Myriad (21.3125x18.5x14.375)=3.28cu ft
Legend (20.25x18.5x15.5625)=3.37cu ft
HT2000 (17.25x22.875x14.5)=3.31cu ft

So the Austral and the Myriad seem to have the same firebox, the Myriad is on a pedestal, and the Austral is on industrial looking legs. The HT2000 is touted as the largest EPA stove they offer, and it may have the biggest footprint, but the firebox is over an inch shorter than in the Legend. the HT2000 also takes 22" logs, while the other stoves all take 20" logs. That may be a good thing if you don't split by hand, lol.

Fyrebug, we must have been typing at the same time, I didn't see your post until after I posted. What's with the discrepancies in the listed firebox sizes if they are all the same?

That's a good question. I hadnt noticed the slight difference on the web site. I'll look into it and let you know.

Checked into it and engineering confirmed the unit(s) firebox size is 14 3/8" H x 21 ¼" D x 18 ½" L. I dont know why the web site shows different but we will fix the typo shortly.

Thanks for bringing this up to my attention.

So, the Legend is the only one that is off, right? That does make the HT200 just a hair bigger than the others?

The measurements provided are as per EPA test requirement. They are not necessarily full 'usable' load capacity. My understanding is most MFG quote this EPA measurement when providing the cu. ft.

If you look at the drawing the 'useable' space might be minus the space taken by the burn tubes. HT-2000 drawing.

UPDATE

Well.. I ordered the stove through Home Depot on Sunday.. (the ENGLANDER NC30) and it was delivered today. HOWEVER, it was damaged. It had a dented ashbox, scratches.. and my boyfriend said it looked like it was a floor model.. in addition.. he said the weld seams looked a bit ragged.... (does Englander sand these down?.. he said they didn't look too hot).

I rejected the stove and had them send it back.. but I am still interested in this model and was highly disappointed that HD would send a product that was in such condition! THey offered me a 50 dollar gift card for my trouble.. but I am finding that Home Depot is really lax on customer service. I don't think I can order the stove directly through ENglander?

So.. I will probably try again. (although I am obviously wary of going through this again) They credited my credit card but didn't work to make sure I got a good model.. I was going to have to ASK for an EXTRA SPECIAL inspection to make sure the product isn't damaged... ?? It wasn't even in a box!.

I was so excited about finally deciding on the Englander and going ahead and finally getting this installed.

I just have heard such good reviews.
I also managed to get it for the 899 price.... the 50 dollar gift card will basically offset the sales tax....

Thanks...

thanks for that confidence.... that helps. So many people have responded as "that is strange".. so maybe it was a fluke.

I have been dealing alot with service people so I am bit weary of getting on the phone ...

I just want to know I have good back up if needed....

cause it does sound like the Englander is a good stove....

Where did you get that price on the 30? I'm looking one now but the best I can come up with is about $1100.

Home Depot.. you have to specify a different store.. I found it in PA.

I don't know why or how they do that.. but some states have different pricing..

Update..

Well I Spoke to Mike.. really nice.. THANKS!

and I reordered it from HD and specified for them to wrap and check it extra well.

However I got confused and something folks should know.. It does come with a blower apparently.. and I was worried it wouldn't.. so I ordered a blower.. but it was the same blower that comes with the stove. (for 124?).. there is an upgrade blower apparently for 189 (on HD) that is a flat profile that might be helpful for those with short clearances.

I am going to have to try and return the extra blower .. hopefully that won't be a hassle...

and hope that the one included works ok!

Just something to know.. HD really doesn't know anything much about their products they sell.. so.. its good to know in advance!

Glad to have this resource here.. hopefully we won't have anymore problems... still have to get it installed...

Thanks

Ok. I see you got it from home depot. Just curious how you got that price. On their website it shows $1200. I dont actually have a store within 100 miles so floor models dont work for me. Are they priced differently in different locations? Thanks. I am VERY new to this.

RandyHall

Go to Home Depot website. At top of their page, change your "home store" to zip 18101 (allentown, PA). Searhc for Englander 30. The price is $899 with free shipping right now. Don't ask any questions.....don't know why they do it. Order it and they will deliver it to your house, FREE. You may want to wait though. Folks have been checking, and at different times of the year they have been $649 with free shipping. Depends how fast you need it.

Hope that helps!
