I finally took down the remaining trunk of a Sugar Maple that the power company cut this Summer. It held water where the two sections came together; A half-gallon must have poured out of the cut! Luckily, after I dropped it and took a couple of rounds off the bottom I was able to split the two sections apart, making it easier to saw than the intact trunk.

The wind came up and the temp started dropping, so I decided to split what Maple I could with the axe, then go after an Oak in a more protected area.

Solid wood there...

This Oak wasn't near the diameter of the Maple but in the end I felt it was worth the effort.
