I finally took down the remaining trunk of a Sugar Maple that the power company cut this Summer. It held water where the two sections came together; A half-gallon must have poured out of the cut! Luckily, after I dropped it and took a couple of rounds off the bottom I was able to split the two sections apart, making it easier to saw than the intact trunk.

The wind came up and the temp started dropping, so I decided to split what Maple I could with the axe, then go after an Oak in a more protected area.

Solid wood there...

This Oak wasn't near the diameter of the Maple but in the end I felt it was worth the effort.

Woody, there was a lot of wood still left in that tree. Glad you also found the beer. A strange place to hide it though.

Nice looking firewood but I havent ever seen that Sam Adams before, any good?????

I think there's gotta be a third to a half cord left there. Not such a strange place; It was with the other Mighty Oak...White!
That beer was nice and cold when I found it. ;-)

I never saw it before, either. It's in a "Brewer's Choice" variety pack. Malty amber ale...right up my alley. :)

I have seen some weird stuff in trees while cutting but was never fortunate enough to find a Sam Adams.

Nice work Woody Stover, we have a cold front with some wind coming in Saturday night which will make it feel like 10-20 below. The wood in the sugar maple looked good.

Thanks, Zap.
Same front is hitting us tonight but temps will moderate again mid-week. I'll be back at it then! :cheese: This will be the coldest weather so far since the Fireview went in, and windy...good chance to see what she'll do.
The Maple was dying so there was a little bit of punk in some of the branch wood. This trunk wood looks really solid though. Should end up with about a cord and three quarters out of this tree.

Sounds great, I have some beech & sugar maple in for the overnight burn, the Liberty was holding 675 stove top shut down.

Haven't had the Fireview much above 500 so far. There's a Liberty running in a local stove shop. That thing tosses huge heat! I've been burning some of the Sugar Maple off that tree that was ready to go, but I'm almost out of that. I'll have to wait 'til next year before I get to burn more of it. Good stuff!

Always top of "Gotton wood" with a beer :zip:
Very nice looking wood. good BTUs

Dangit that was a nice big sugar maple. would've been a great tree to tap at one time, and it burns awesome once seasoned. Have some in the stove as I write this post. Getting ready later today to start tapping my sugar maples, sugaring season starts today. Though I never have gotten any Sam Adams out of my sugar maples......hmm, you may be onto something, Woody!

Here is a related wood product.

The sap was running a little in a few red maples I cut last weekend. Once this cold spell passes by it looks like there is some good sugaring weather on the way.
