im gonna be the new owner of a stihl 460 magnum monday..used saw got a good buy on it.........350.00....but what bar should i buy for this saw?....i wanna go with 20 or 22 inch bar for my main bar...and later ill buy a bigger one......and where do i buy a good bar?...outside of stihl nothing around locally...and a place that sells the forester bars

Get yourself a nice Stihl ES bar and call it a day...

whats the es bar cost in 20 inch?

As the others have said it is hard to beat the OEM STIHL bars. The only other bars I could recommend are the Windsor bars. I have two in use and they are great.

If I remember right, my 18" was around $45'ish...

i have 20 and 24 use 20 most

Since you asked for good bars and not the best ... I've had good luck with Carleton bars and chains on my Huskies... (WoodlandPro chain is really rebranded Carleton chain and often cheaper.)

20" bar and chain - $60

24" bar and chain - $70

30" bar only - $55

Stihl are probably a little bit better that Carleton for 30% more...

Canon or Sugihara are probably a little bit better than Stihl for 50% more ...

The OEM Stihl equipment (Bar and Chains) will be a premium price compared to others out there, but you also get the life out of them if properly used and maintained. I will not buy anything other than Stihl equipment for my chainsaw needs......

When you have something that works, there's no sense changing!

If you go with the ES bar, ask for the wide nose version. It's fantastic for plunge cuts and doesn't cost a penny more than the regular ES Bar.

I paid $50.99 for a 20" ES bar here in PA on Saturday.

28 is perfect balance on the 460....20 inch is just down right alot of fun....Oh and +1000 on the es bar! :cheese:

Yes save yer money up and when you have enough, get a Stihl ES bar. I have three 28" bars, a 36", three 20" and an 18". Not counting my limbing and pole saws, which also have rollomatics. You know which one I use the most? The 28, because you don't have to bend down when bucking most wood with that bar. If I were you I would go with a 28", you'll thank yourself down the road.

It's Monday night. We should be seeing a picture.

I can't comment on the Stihl bars, but I'm quite happy with my 28" Windsor. I was using it almost exclusively, but I've been using my HD dolkita most of the time now. Trying to wear it out so I can make it a big saw, too :coolsmirk:
