hey everyone,

I'm havng trouble having with the smoke rolling out of the front door of my Lopi Liberty when loading. Given all these knowns: Flue is clean, top of flue is clean, everything was operating normally with my original stove, Lopi Endeavor (smaller brother).

Is there a fan that I can install above the box and before the wall thimble to accelerate exhaust speed...inline temp resistant fan?

I would only really need it when loading.

the smoke doesn't constantly roll out....just at times, seems more and more prevalant, that the smoke is getting into the house.

most importantly, the woman in my life is annoyed of the smoke.

help help help.

What kind of chimney is this? How's the stove connected to it? How tall is it? Does it follow the 10-3-2 rule?

There are draft inducers available, but they are costly and would be a band-aide solution to something that shouldn't be an issue.

Sure the baffle plates are in correctly? Or insulation blanket if the stove has one? (I can't remember if they do or not).

Doesn't Lopi incorporate a bypass that you slide open before opening the door? This would give the smoke a direct path to the chimney and should help a great deal.. I would check to ensure it is working properly as my B-I-L told me about a relative that had some trouble and the plate was incorrctly installed from the factory.. I have no more details than that..

Sounds like your stove is in the Negative Pressure
Plane of your home. Have you tried opening a door
or cracking open a window before you open the stove
door? I know it sounds counter-productive, opening
a door or window in mid-winter, but if that does work,
you'll know the reason for the blow back. You don't
want anything in-line but up top might help.

I've installed them in houses where the wood burning stove
is located in the basement & the homeowners had the same
problems as you - ESPECIALLY at start-up...

the chimney is single wall to thimble then double wall SS to the top. 4' vertically up till it turns into the wall thimble then up ~35'. I mentioned in my post, I've never had a problem with my original stove, lopi endeavor. in fact, i cleaned out the flue system right before i hooked up the larger stove.

i know the box and the door size's are now different.

I do open up the door slowly before loading. that i know and i practice regularly. I just don't open the door like i'm rushing the process. I open up slowly and wait till the ashes and drafts calm down...then i inch it open till i can get splits inside.

when the fire is in a full rolling state, the drafting is not a issue. so i know the baffles are not the problem. only when and sometimes when the fire is lazy, or if i have one split in there idling.

thanks!

I know you said you open the door slowly, but have you tried opening the door open 2", putting on the gloves, picking up the splits, and THEN opening the door the rest of the way?

I have a Jotul Rockland on a short chimney and if I open the door I get smoke into the room. If I slightly open the door for 30 seconds or so the natural draft velocity increases enough that all the smoke gets sucked up the chimney when I do open the door.

Sounds like a NPP issue as DAKSY said. Try opening a window nearby. You really should avoid a situation where you have a lazy fire with one split smoldering. Reload sooner and add splits in pairs.

With 35 ft of flue this should not be an issue once it's warmed up, though I can see how it could be an issue when first starting up. The Liberty has a shallower, wide firebox and a wider door, so I can see how it might behave differently than the Endeavor.

How long do you wait to open the door after opening up the bypass? When was the cap and chimney last checked for creosote build-up?

If this is just during the startup phase, maybe change to top-down starting of the fire?

the dimensions of both are definitely different. If i push the lit split towards the back end of the box...it isn't so bad, the smoke. But still eventually rolls out. I seldom or hard to remember that happening with the endeavor.

i usually pause a good 10-15 seconds till the door is wide open. I crack it, pause for all the ashes to stop swirling...wait and wait. then pull it wide open.

Start up....the stove never gets a break. its chilly here now.

Try opening your primary air for a couple minutes before opening the door.
