Burning Hunk
OK.....So my wife brings 4 bags of these home for me the other day and says "Hey.....you haven't burned these for a long time, thought you'd like to try 'em!" :) I couldn't ask for a better pellet partner!.....Anyways, after burning through a few bags I thought the results should be shared. First observation is the nice, strong bag....I think it beats the old one. Second, There were absolutely ZERO fines or dust in the bags, a nice plus. :) Third, they smell weird like melted crayons or something. :bug: Now for the burning properties......HUGE amounts of ash and a clinkered burnpot.....below average heat. This is my exact reasoning for not purchasing tonnage again after 2005. For the price there are way better fuels on the market. Now please remember......these are MY results, everyone else's will differ. ;-)

TO ME burning a couple bags is no proper review it takes more then burning a couple bags to get the stove fine tuned for any brand pellet.

Whaddaya say to dat?

just askin.

Used to be one of the better brands in New England. Now just a middle of the road pellet. Disapointing and Believe it or not, They were even worse at one time. Still fetching a decent coin for the name though!

Does it have what plant they were bagged at?

If it takes a couple a bags? You need some tuning lessons.

I don't completely disagree with that statement, BUT.....my Accentra is always given an immaculate cleaning before trying a new pellet and is very revealing as to pellet quality. Monster amounts of ash and clinkered burnpot after 2 bags is just un-excusable. Like I said, These were MY results and others will differ. :smirk: As a side note....I can run 20 bags of Cubies or Barefoots through the stove and get Zero clinkers and way less ash, just sayin' :)

Thanks for the review. I agree with your review. I bought 1 ton ($253) of NEWPs from the dealer when i bought my stove because I was a newbie at pellets. I thought there were no difference in brands. Boy was I wrong. After researching and trying different types of pellets, I can't wait to burn the remaining 17 bags in order to make room in my garage. It's totally not worth the price that I paid.

The bags don't say exactly which plant they were bagged at....just shows all the plant locations/addresses. The date code on top left corner shows 10-14-11 ...maybe not a true date code. The bags were purchased locally, so I assume they are out of the Jaffrey, NH plant as it is a lot closer to me than NY. And yes, they are fetching top dollar for this fuel. If they were less than 200.00/ton I suppose they would be OK to mix in with some better stuff. Back in the 90's New England pellets were just about all that was available around here....except for Energex green bags out of Quebec and the old Stove Chow's out of Catamount fuel in NW Mass. I am really glad that we have such a great selection to choose from nowadays! :) As a side note.....I did burn 10 bags of the Greene Supremes late last fall and they were much better ash/clinker wise. I know for a fact that they came out of one of the NY plants. If Lowe's around here gets them in again I would consider tonnage....with Military discount they would have been sub 200.00/ton :)

Same brands I was burning. Stove chow From Agway and a stove shop was the ticket for a while, Then they disappeared. Newp from a stove shop and We also used the Energex Ca from Blue seal until they went crazy on prices. Lived a few seasons with Dry Creek a lumber yard was trucking in. Blazers were had at the HD in southington and then in torrington. Agway had some Heartlands and once even had Bear Mountains. Then they had some stuff called BioHeat. CTPellet was the first pellet house we bought from. Mostly Turmans and Some Hamers from them. With a couple of shortages mixed in and some horse bedding to sneak through the lean times. Its been real fun.

I wish I kept better track of all the fuel I used. But 5 tons for the first 8 seasons would be very close(could be more) and then around 4 tons until last season. I should be under 3 this season. just cruzin now!

Well my "free" ton (old style bags) have been absolutely awful....a shoulder pellet at best....I needed to mix with Chow's to get them to feed through on my old stove.....long pellets and not shiny at all and wouldn't slide down the hopper....my upper auger would crush them and jam constantly....loads of ash and no heat.....my new stove at least gets them through the auger but still have the ash and no heat issue. I might unload the rest at then end of the season for cheap....we'll see......I probably should have contacted NEWP about it but after all they were free but jeez.......difficult to work with......

what you think of those heartlands i got a free ton with that used stove i guess they are only out in western mass

My Quad loved them. The first pellet I burned that made the stove hit the high limit! Awesome heat IMHO. I wanted to take a rid to get some for a review. Maybe this summer.

Burn some and tell us what ya think!

Yes....it's been lots of fun! :) And real warm to boot! This winter has been incredibly mild, I don't think burning the 3-3.5 ton mark will be exceeded. Historic to say the least. :bug:
Last winter I smoked through 5 plus tons like nothing.....very low temps and mucho snow! And wow....I forgot about those Heartlands :) I think it was around 98-99....my local stove shop had major supply issues and that was all they could get one winter. I remember them being almost "sticky"....like pine pitch. They smelled real nice though, forget the burn properties....never saw them again after that. My wife's friend lives out near lake Tahoe and burns lots of Bear Mountains.....from her comments I think they would put many a pellet to shame! :bug:

By the looks of your signature it seems you're spoiled too!! ;-)

I've about 20 bags left out of the ton I bought in October. Can't say I won't be happy when they are gone, but I have burned worse this season also. Ash and heat levels on par with stove chow for me. Considering I paid about as much for that ton as I can get Vermont Softies for now, I think I got screwed. I was out of the pellet game for a while and went with brand recognition. Shame on me for not doing better homework. (or finding this site sooner) The hunt is on for next year, and low ash is top priority. ("JT" I'm holding you to your reviews!!) I'm thinking Vermont and MWP unless I come across a deal on PWI, Turman, or I would love to try Somersets.

Any word on if they will be selling Okies to the street right from the Upton facility? I would like to try them also.

Couple cups down the hatch now.

I agree.

I'm just about through a ton of NEWPs that I got in November. Brand new at this pellet stove thang, but they haven't been all that bad. My Comparison is with Curran softies which burn well - hot with a fair amount of ash, and some Nature's heat and Fireside Ultras from Wally and Home Depot respectively. At first I thought the NEWPS were pretty bad, but I might have been biased by the reviews I was reading here (bought 'em before I joined). They will leave deposits in my burn pot if I run too rich, but I can eliminate that by letting enough air in - then they're really no worse for carbon or glass dirt than the Currans which will burn clean with (only) slightly less air, so maybe blowing less heat out the pipe and giving me a little more efficiency. Funny though, the two brands blended 50/50 burn better in this stove than either alone... ;-)
My NEWPs are from the NH plant (we're pretty close). FWIW, the Penningtons (then 190/ton - now 250 ppppbbbbttttt!) weren't any worse than the NEWPs - they were from last June, not sure of the plant, mostly red oak from the smell. The Fireside Ultras were pretty darn good, I thought. Would have bought more if they had them. Probably going to need some more pellets before the end of the season - hoping to get some of the Vermonts which are made not too far from here but seem in demand (naturally) and hard to come by.

2k sq ft c. 1800 house, reasonably retrofitted for insulation and weatherizing.
FHA oil furnace set to 68 day, 60 night. Comes on rarely for a little while at 6:15 on the coldest mornings (below 0).
Keep the house 70 - haven't burned much oil since I got the stove started...

Like I tell everyone, Try some for yourself JIC.

Just a hack testing pellets in my basement, Not true lab test's and there could be variables. Fiber quality of the batch is something that can muck things up! I burned my share of MWP and Turmans. Pretty steady with what I posted. Vermonts seem to hold closely too! PWI I only burned that one time.

NO sales at Upton AFAIK. You'll need to get a list of dealers and go hunting. Where you at?

Jay, just bustin' bout the reviews!! I understand YMMV. I'm in west-central RI. (that's kinda funny now that i read it!) I've come up with a pretty good list of dealers. Most are a "nice" ride away. Haven't quite figured out who has the Oakies around me. LP is probably the closest.

Just making sure! Some actually have been ticked at me when there stove didn't like what mine did! Gotta keep it real!

If you head to LPP? You really really need to get some Somersets. ;-) Say hello to Steve for me!

t/y - Fantastic forum. Saved a lot of time learning the hard way by lurking here! Agree - the Curran softies seem pretty good. They were 260/ton in December. Les than I paid for the NEWPS. Everything decent seems expensive around here.
