Wood burner demographics

Looks as though most here are in the 30-40 range. As I suspected.

I think as people get older they opt for pellet burners?

My dad just turned 71 and he burns 5-6 cord a year. He cuts and splits all of it him self.

Damn! I didn't realize I was so old!

He is one though SOB. Did I mention that he has had 4 yes 4 hip replacement surgeries.

I think i will join the Harry Potter forum, and post the same poll.

Hey, I'm with you guys! I'll hold off as long as I can and burn wood, but as pellet burners get more popular and the price comes down, my old back will love me if I convert to pellets.

You should explain to him that those titanium replacement joints just aren't designed for that kind of wear & tear.

Well... There ya go. He has an unfair advantage. Most of us only have 2 hips.

Anton he had his first two replaced in the mid 80s. He wore thoes out and in 2001 he had the left replaced. The right one was done 2 years ago.

fell, haul, buck, split about 4 - 5 cords of maple, beech, ash and black cherry (each)
swim across a local inland lake (with my 11 year old son)
paddle a kayak from Mackinac Island to Traverse City via South Manitou Island (check a MI map out)
wrestle my 2 Newfies daily and brush their teeth
help a feller deliver a sailboat, a nice'un, from W Palm Beach (FL) to Huntington (Long Island, NY) with Ernesto breathing hard down our necks
pick 11 quarts of wild blackberries
build an outdoor wood shed near the house (not quite done)
bust and replace the windshield on my tractor cab and
spread 18 ton (sounds like a lot but isn't) of 6A split rock on my 2-track wet spots

I live alone, eat alone, work alone (except for 'bout 30 of 65 years) but drink and play with friends.

I don't have a Mrs., but if I did, she'd be really somethin' (I'd be sure she knew it) and make my puny list above look like small 'taters.

And when they put me in the box, I want to have done everything (at least once) and expect to look bad. Real bad.
Just guess I don't want my friends to be sayin' "He looks to good to be dead".

Now gotta go keep the coyotes from my wild turkeys..

You are the man Marty! That is one heck of a trip on the big lake. I get nervous on the ferry to Mackinaw Island myself.

I'm 52 and really enjoy cutting wood and even like splitting it with a maul or wedge up by the garage. I get a lot of satisfaction gazing at my woodpile stacked under the lean to on my garage as it grows throughout the summer. I've got it easy though. I take the mower deck off my Craftsman and pull little trailer I have with it very close to where I'm cutting in the woods. Each trailer load is about 1/3 of a face cord. It's really good exercise.

Of course a single poll will not tell the story, but I actually expected the 30-40 range to be swapped with the 40-50 range in the numbers. You're only polling those who burn wood and who are computer literate enough to post on a forum on the internet. I think there are plenty of old timers burning wood out there. You just wont find them on these forums.

This 30-40 is 39 and my first wood burner should be installed by the end of the month... so you can use me to support either position.
