Local craigslist find. Seller said it needed carb work, but when he described the symptoms it sounded more like low compression. Sure enough, when I showed up, a tug on the rope confirmed low compression. Made an offer and brought it home. Likely straight gassed, but I vac and pressure tested just to be safe. Seals are good. Rebuilt the carb for piece of mind.

I think the cylinder will be salvageable, so I will just put a Meteor piston in it and a fresh fuel line.

Clean looking saw. How much do you think you'll have in it?

If the cylinder is runnable I'll be at $260...... just $100 more if not

394's are pretty affordable as big saws go, one here sat on CL for $400 for weeks. I was surprised!

sweet deal. while you are at it checkyour compression release. they are pretty inexpensive.

once you get it running right you are gonna love it. awesome saw.

Yes, around here too. People will pay almost retail for a used 290 as long as it says "farm boss" in the ad lol.

Stihl is the brand for resale. Buddy of mine has sold totally ragged out Stihls for nearly new price and then does go out and buys a new one. I mentioned awhile back I thought my 395 might only bring 400.00 even though I see they are about 1200.00 new now. Its probably a size most people don't want and if I had bought a Solo first it would never have showed up here for sure.

Sure is. When I'm looking to flip a saw I buy stihl, when I'm looking to keep a saw, I get a Husky!

Makes a lot of common Sense! :cheese:

Around here they're both brands that everyone n CL seems to think are made of solid gold. I see used 455 Ranchers in decent shape but nothing remarkable about them with asking prices OVER the usual retail $400.

Ditto MS290's, almost always a high price, but the deals come and go and when you see one you gotta have cash in your pocket and head out the door.

Thats how I got my $75 346xp runner.

You don't want to sell that. Just retire it to the shelf if you get other more modern saws. I still fire my 041 up from time to time......love the sound of the old stihls :)

My old 041AV was $359 brand new in 1983, Still use it till this day. Was there the day my dad bought it. I'll take $300 for it. :)

Got an old Mac 110 as well, 2 stroke ear candy.

Interesting to know the original price, thanks!

I also have a Homelite SuperXL (57 cc, only made in 1967 according to the info I found). I recently got it out and it started on the second pull, which sure beats any of the newer saws I have! Both of them are good saws but heavy and I am a bit concerned about all that power without modern safety features.

I've owned at one time 5 SXLs. Cut with them for 25yrs. They were made for a long time up till 93. Old reed type technology with no AV but yes good durable saws just real heavy and slow by todays standards.

I still use my 045 or a regular basis.

Any saw that requires you to stand on the damn thing so you can pull it over is ALL right in my book.

I've got the non AV, discontinued in '77.
Came with a 28" rollernose bar/chain off the Bay ~130 +shipping. I've run it since late '08 as my primary saw, of course downsized to 20" rollernose with multiple chains when I see a good price online.
Every time I go to the private tree company dump site onlookers are in awe of the effortless power this saw has.
I felt bad for these two fellas a couple weeks ago that had showed up to fill thier trailers. they were trying cut Pin Oak and and some Pecan with a small Craftsman saw.
They already had their trailers ~1/2 full when I arrived. I had bucked 20"+ oak log had it split with powerhorse dual splitter and my shortbox heaping full in about an hour.
They were still fighting to cut 6" limbs when I pulled out after I'd had a cold beverage and BS'd with the retired landowner that loves to come out and see someone "that knows how to cut some wood"

Mine has a 20" bar. I have wondered how it would do with a bigger bar (24-25")? You must have strong arms to use that as your primary saw :)

As for the guys fighting to cut 6" limbs with their Craftsman, that sounds more like a very dull chain rather than a fault of the saw. They may not know any better. Sure a 041 will do a lot better, but they still shouldn't have trouble with 6" stuff. I have a friend that I do bridle trail maintenance with. He has some off brand saw that just wouldn't cut even though he "sharpened" it several times. We were working on up to 24" trees. He finally got a new chain and it was a totally new saw.

394's are pretty cool saws...

041 on CL close to me today, wish I had more money then I knew what to do with.

guess I do know what to do with it.

this thing would be fun to run play with and put it back on CL if I didn't like it.

Yeah they stopped multiple times and attempted to freehand sharpen it. I was just chuckling to myself while that saw was screaming and throwing dust.
The guy running the saw would stop part way through a cut and look over at the ol 041 just bogging its way through the oak i was slicing.

That one on CL seems high @$275. You could possibly call and remind he seller the saw is at a minumum 35yo. They may not really know what they have, or its a restored saw(looks good in the pics) in which case they have that in a new cylinder/piston, stickers paint and other odd and ends. The handle wrap is still intact which makes me believe its a restored saw.

Bucking all day with the old 041's shouldn't be a chore. Lift saw, move over predetermined distance, set her down and pull the trigger! Rinse, Repeat!
