Feeling the Heat

We bought a 10,000 pound smittybilt to load vehicles on a trailer. (no money for better brand). Since brand new the winch would run in either direction for about 10 seconds then stop for 30 seconds and repeat. Called smittybilt and they sent a new control box and controller and still the same thing happens. Is there something in these things that shuts the unit off if it gets hot? Could this be shutting off prematurely? Smittybilt won't help again since it was bought for a business and we returned a 8,000 unit that failed for another issue.

There may be a thermal switch in the motor itself that shuts it off if overheated. If there is one, it may be oversensitive, or have a flakey connection. Or, something could be binding that overheats the motor quickly. Just a WAG, I've never even seen a smittybuilt unit.

I have a Smitty XRC8 on my jeep. I have done a couple long pulls on it in the heat of summer and had it shut off. I usually feel the motor and its pretty warm so i figured it has some sort of thermo regulator. it sounds like the regulator is faulty. Smittybuilt should have an exploded view of the motor somewhere. You could take it apart and try to fix it.

My favorite thing about my smittybilt is it was only $300. I could have bought a similar lifetime warranty warn for $1200 and paid $200 in shipping everytime something went wrong. But this way when my smitty wears out I just buy a new one.

My guess is that it isn't getting too hot if it only runs for 10 seconds the first time. Maybe the battery voltage is dropping too low, and the controller waits for the battery to recover?

That was my thought. I assume that the correct size wire was run to winch? Quite a long run to the trailer.
