So, I got the smoke dragon out the back door all on my own.

Now, the 30 is 28 1/2" deep, and calls for 14" CTC at the rear, but my hearth is brick (pictured.) Manual is unclear what effect the heat shield kit has on the CTC, or whether brick is combustible.

Input, anyone?

Brick is not combustible. i have the 13 in an old fireplace and the back of the stove is 1" from the back of the firebox. I checked with Englander first, and they said, GO! What you may need to do is extend the front of the hearth...? Best of luck, and congrats!

Bricks no problem. By the way. You ended up with the side convection heat shields in the deal too. Those things cost over $96 plus shipping.

Nice looking stove and hearth! Congrats!

Stove looks good! Wish mine had such a nice spot to work in.

What's going on with the water coming down the flue tho?

Water WAS coming down the old flue. Repair of bad flashing plus new liner solved that problem. Now I just have schmootz on my brick and I'm not sure how to clean it.

Bricks are no problem as long as nothing behind them is combustible.

Your good to go bro. No combustibles in the brick. And if the old smoke dragon never gave any problems, the 30 sure as hell won't!
You can try TSP or a mild detergent to try and clean the brick, acid wash would work also, but really doesn't look worth the hassle. Once the 30 and piping are in place, you ain't going to see much of that stain.
Fire that fker up! And lets see some pics! Review of how it works & heats for you Vs. the old gal would be cool!
Enjoy!
PS. You will be able to load North/south now, so that will be much easier also.
If you don't use the side shields, let me know. I might have to buy a set for mine when I get her hooked up.
You'll be glad you got that instead of the 13, trust me.

Alright, so here's the first burn update...

Started with 4 little BL splits maybe 3" across max and 1/4 of a Duraflame; 30 seems to like the door cracked a lot longer than the dragon did.
Took nearly 45 minutes to get those splits coaled up enough where I could pull them forward and load on top.
Nice to see the air wash working right; by now the glass on the dragon would have been completely sooted up and the 30 is crystal clear.
Never seen secondaries before... so THAT'S what all the fuss is about!
N/S loading is way easier... I mean, N/S loading is WAY easier.
Need to relearn air management; seems I can damn near put the fire out if I ham-fist the primary air.

Gotta run... getting' warm in here.... :cheese:

About time.

Here's yer shirt.

You're too far North. Don't think it is gonna happen up there.

Bluedogz - what dragon did you replace? How much space are you heating? and is that an 8" flu/chimney- how tall?

I am picking up a 30 soon to replace my VC Defiant and would like to get more details as you go through the learning curve with the new stove because I think we are in a similar set up.

Nice looking hearth by the way.

He used to burn an old Sierra.
House size is 2600SF
Just relined with 6" flex.
Around 30' tall, I forget exactly, lol and I helped him install it LOL
That hearth gets no justice from the photos, it is beautiful and the room it is in is very cool.

Blue dogs, that's a great set up. Congrats. Post some pics of that sucker blazing. Man that hearth set up is great. Did you build that for your old VC or was that there when you bought the house?

The hearth was built with the house circa 1975. It seems original owner intended all-wood heat and never finished the job... other than this hearth, there's a fireplace upstairs & down, plus a flue in the basement that seems situated for a furnace. I'd love to take credit for the hearth you see, but I can't.

Install looks great man. I love the hearth and Brother Bart is oh SO generous with his T shirts. ;-)

The gold star for generosity goes to Hogwildz for killing his own Sunday and burning his own gas to shlep down here and install the liner, in exchange for nothing but hot chocolate and chili.

I am also proud of my t-shirt, though... wonder if I can wear it to church?

Oh, and since everyone asked, here she is in action:
