I have never purchased my Pellets before September because of the extreme humidity we experience here in Massachusetts. I store my pellets in an outdoor (Rubbermaid) plastic shed. I have used the large damp rid moisture removal system for the 10 or so bags that have been leftover with no problem. Can I safely store 2 tons that are removed from the shrinkwrap and hand stacked without worrying about the high humidity?

Thanks in advance!

Alright, Here we go again! :) (pulling up lawn chair)

I've never stored my pellets outside, but from reading posts on the subject for over the last 4 years - I would if I had no choice & not loose sleep over it. From the sound of it, I think you'll be fine.

I just used the last of four tons of CleanFire hard woods in my garage in S. Maine from 2008, no issues. Just keep them on a pallet off the ground and keep them from the rain.

I had two ton in my yard the way the were delivered for about three months. They were wrapped very well. I then bought a 7x7 Rubbermaid shed and moved them in there about August...along with two more ton I had in my house. Not one bag had any moisture issues....I did put a tarp on the top and duct tape the top of the door to prevent any sneaky rain from getting in....

The same question with a variation, my basement has condensation issues during the summer even with a dehumidifier, so should I move the stash into the garage for the summer, or is direct contact with water the only potential problem?

Thanks for the help,

i store mine on the side of my garage. concrete slab with roof. i have never had moisture problems. Leave them on the pallet with original wrapper. I had stored some other ones outside on pallets then covered with water proof tarp. big mistake. Had alot of moisture under tarp and on the bags of pellets

I store mine outside and have had times when the outside of the bags had a ton of condensation on them and have never had an issue with them falling apart. Also with my latest ton, the plastic cover that came with them had a hole in the seam and I didn't notice until after a heavy rain. I removed the cover, dried off one of the bags (thinking surely I just ruined at least 5 bags of pellets) and they were perfectly fine. IMO they are decently resilient to moisture (minus direct rain)

Thank you all for the input, it's appreciated!!!

It'll be fine. Most of the places around here store their pellets outside, year round. They're all on pallets, double-wrapped in plastic. I'm sure there will be those that disagree, but I've never had an issues with the Greene Teams that I've bought from my local Quad dealer, and they store all their pellets outside at the back of their parking lot.

I understand that they are double wrapped from the factory, I will need to remove the wrapping and hand stack them inside my 7x7 storage shed. I'm most concerned about humidity. I can place the large damp rid bucket in the shed and pull out close to a gallon of water in a week.

I stored a ton last summer outside under my sunroom, shielded from rain but not from humidity and I had zero issues.

as long as your pellets dont get wet you will not have any issues .

How big of a footprint does a on of pellets have stacked on the skid? Just looking to make some room to put them.

I keep mine in the yard with two heavy duty tarps over them; what is left from the winter stays out there all summer long. It gets quite humid here in Michigan and I have had no problem with them deteriorating.

Thank you,
I will now store my Ice Melt with the pellets through the summer!

I have a barn I store pellets in, but if I were going to use a shed such as a Rubbermaid or similar, one thing I would do is put a tarp on the ground under the shed to prevent moisture from the ground from rising and building up inside the shed. Not sure if the sheds have air vents (like soffits on a house), but if not, it may be a good idea to install a couple to let the shed breathe.
