I am mad. I have had a green Kromer for about 4 years. I thought I left it in my wife's van. But I looked all over today and can't find it. Favorite cap, many positive compliments from others "in the know". It particularly gratifying to run into someone in downtown Chicago who recognizes it as a genuine kromer.

Luckily, I will be in Lac Labelle, MI (houghton area) next week and will get my choice of the new ones on the rack. Anyone have a favorite style or color?

Surplus Outlet in downtown Houghton will set you up with a new one, brother. These caps are made in the western u.p. (as west as you can get).

Judging from the number of responses, no one has heard of them before. Actually, any clothing store up in the copper country should carry them. That is, any clothing store that handles lines like carhart, filson, woolrich, etc.

I'm on a mission to get one of every color. Got a dark brown one for christmas so now I have 3 (grey, brown and plaid). My next is the oil cloth.

got a chinese knockoff at tractor supply-red and black plaid-12 bux. i know,i know,it's not a stormy,but hey-i'm in kentucky. ha

I wore one of those when I was a kid and hated it.

As you likely know, I'll be going through houghton on my way north. I would like to stop at surplus outlet. I recall parking being tough in downtown houghton, and I will have my 2 place trailer with me. What are my chances at parking? Also, does this place have a good selection? I would like to get one of the oil cloth ones, along with a winter cap.

Is it kind of like an olympic?

LOL!!

My wife tossed mine several years ago. I can't blame her as it kind of reeked and really needed to be replaced. Traditional Red plaid, with LOTS of discoloration from blue grease, and hydro combined with dog spit and tattered ear flaps. They aren't cheap, but if ya average out cost per year, it works out to beat the cost of inflation in half the life of the hat! LOL!!

I need to get another and get it broken in for next year.

Best way I ever found to break them in is get them wet and wear it until it dries. Fits like a glove after that.

Mine is the traditional red plaid, although it's a newer adjustable design with some hidden elastic rather than fitted. This winter my wife got herself and the kids each one, although neither kid seems terribly fond of theirs.

You know what's a weird thing to steal? Mackinac Bridge tokens. My wife had a mostly full roll "disappear" when her car was at the dealer out here in MD. Pissed us off when we found out, they were bought for $1.50 each, and the toll is now $4.

classic red!

was sitting there reading posts with my green Kromer warming my dome when i found this post.
sorry for your loss..........

My Red Plaid is great, but I have been eyeing the Blaze Orange for next year's bird season.

Never heard of it and, honestly, I don't think I've ever seen one out here in Boston. I may have to start a fashion trend.

Thanks for the heads up on that place. Loved it. Bought 2 new kromers. Highly recommend this place, if you are up in Houston or the keweenaw. Good (not great) snow. About 2-3 feet in the bush.

not a whole lot of snow in houston normally ?

Well, after recommending Surplus Outlet to you, I thought I had better stop in there myself.
First impression was "Man, I thought it would be larger". Then I saw the basement area. Second impression was same as the first. Third impression was the best one, and will cause me to go back there whenever I am in Houghton...I found a couple pair of Carhart carpenter double front jeans...for $26! They had a whole shelf of assorted sizes for that price. Couldn't believe it. I think they are usually around $45 or $50, no?
Now, if you ever get up to the Marquette area for snowmobiling (Big Bay is prime), be sure to stop into Getz's in downtown Marquette on Front st. It's even better.

Ahhh.. the Stormy.. I am a toboggan man myself, but my wife got a Stormy back in the late 70's when on her first visit to my families home in northern MN.. she still has and loves it. Green. The only color to have. I suspect she would be upset if she lost track of it.

Rustynut, ha! Typo on my part. Friggin' spell check! Meant houghton, not Houston. Big difference in snow, I think.

Yooper, yes it is smaller than I expected, but had what I wanted. I missed the basement. Doh!!! there's always next time.

Btw, I found my green Kromer! After using the two new ones, I realize that it's a bit small. Good for fall weather though.

The break in method works well here to. Get it wet and wear it until it dries. It will fit great again.

New to hearth.com, I showed my girlfriend this post when it originally posted and said, "These guys will talk about anything -- even their hats." She took notice, I guess, because this arrived in the mail today for me.

I'd say that girlfriend is a keeper! My wife of 34 years just bought me my third stormy kromer for Christmas. Gotta love them girls that get it right!

I have two one blaze orange for hunting, woods work, the other is special order Lake Superior Bic Top Chautauqua made out of canvas like material. Both are real nice caps. On the railroad I worked for, a lot of the guys wore them, some year around.
