I own a Harmon Accentra-2 that I bought in 2005. Over the last two burning seasons I am getting a noise that I believe is coming from the auger. I have had the local stove shop out two times and they say that they can't find anything wrong. Today I took the back panel off while the stove was running to see if I could find the problem. The noise sounds like the chain is running up the side of one of the sprockets then popping back down. As I watched the stove feed pellets the chain and sprockets looked to be working fine. I did notice that the sound seed to come from the auger while it is turning almost as if it were catching on something. Has anyone experieced this problem and does anyone know how to fix it. Any help would be appreciated.

Chris

Are you sure it's not just crunching a pellet? Have you tried different pellet brands? You should see scrape marks on the sprocket if it's the chain.

It is not that. I have used many types of pellets over the years and am very happy with the Okies i burn now. It has something to do with the auger. Thanks for your reply.

could be your sprockets are worn enough such tnat they ride over more easily.....how sharp are the sprocket teeth? When they wear, they tend to get fairly sharp........the chain is a harder steel than the sprockets, so, they wear with time....(there is a sprocket replacement kit available from your Harman dealer......Harman stopped making the single sprockets available a couple years back and instead came out with a kit which includes 2 sprockets, the feeder motor frame, a chain, and the nylon "idler" bushing...be prepared, this kit is pretty expensive....)

Also check your fines box and see how much fines are in there.....if its full or nearly so, there can be enough resistance in the slide plate armature to cause the feeder to overpower the sprockets and force the chain over them.......apologies if you already checked this, but alot of folks dont realize they fines containers need to be cleaned.....its easy....one wing nut....but often overlooked.

Are there fines containers in the back of the stove. If so I have never cleaned them. I was on u-tube this morning and found a guy that had the same problem as mine. He said that he took off the auger and found the auger plate to be filled with a hard gummy substance. Once he cleaned it up the noise went away.

It's not catching on built up carbon where the auger meets the burn pot is it?

Edit: No one ever mentioned a fines container to me. I would think that would have been mentioned at my install.

Take the right cover off the back, a few inches behind the motor for the chain you'll see a wing nut that holds a flat plate on. Cover the impeller of the blower motor before removing the plate, all the fines in the small box behind the plate will fall into the blades if you don't. If the hopper is empty when you do this it's a good idea to remove the slide plate for cleaning, being careful to note how it fits. If you've never cleaned this box it's almost certain to be the source of your noise.

Thanks Souzafone. I am going to clean that small box this week as soon as I get some free time. Thanks to everyone else for your help. It is nice to have such a support group.

Well I got to clean the stove last night to to bottom and front to back. I was able to find and clean that plate and tha slider plate in the back of the stove. There was not a lot of fines inside the plate. I put everything back together and fired up the stove. The noise is still there. I don't know if it is coming from the turning of the auger, the sprockets or the auger moter. The stove seems to run fine but I would like to find the source of the noise. Does anyone have any more ideas.

try to isolate the noise.......hard tofix something if you cant tell whats making the noise......if you want to just throw parts at it, put a new gearmotor on it.......you also might try snugging up the uager retaining bolts on either side of the auger....possible they loosened and are causing the auger tocontact the auger tube, causing the squeek......possible hard carbon at the end of the auger causing it to rub as well.....
