Hi, first post but have been reading for months.

November 2011 I bought a Quadrafire Yosemite. I needed a stove that would be hearth mounted in front of my fireplace,
which has a lentil height of 29.5 inches.

I wanted the Cumberland Gap, which in rear-vent configuration has 28 3/16 height to top of stove pipe. i thought it
was a perfect fit, but the wood stove shop said it requires 2 inches clearance from the lentil.

the yosemite is a nice stove but can't get my 1900 sf house above ~70, even during this mild winter.

i am also jealous of my friend's top loading Vermont Castings. After a night of burning i always have a mess
in front of my stove from using the front door. side door ok, but so small it makes loading a chore.

I am not concerned with staying with Quad stoves.

can anyone 1) confirm the 2 inch clearance noted above, as i can't deduce that from the qaudrafire website, and they post no contact phone #,
2) suggest a larger stove to me that will fit into my fireplace? i'd prefer top load but could live without it.

ps - my wood is fine. my neighbor burns 4 yo seasoned and has given me a week's worth to see if things improved over what i had bought
earlier this winter. better, but still lacking.

yosemite specs: (not that i agree)

42,500 BTUs—Heats up to 2,200 square feet
1.5 cu. ft. interior capacity / 18" maximum log length
Up to 9 hours of burn time from each load of wood

I'm new too...but have a few questions...

- How old is your house?
- How well insulated is it? Are most air gaps sealed, or do you feel drafts near windows, doors, baseboards, outlets?
- Where is the stove in relation to the rooms you want to heat? Open layout with central stove, or are there separate rooms and/or stove on one end of the house?

Again, I'm new but I'm loving my Fireview...I imagine a new one would be even better. We can get our old, old house up to 70 degrees on the first floor (60's upstairs) using the Fireview and the pellet stove on a fairly low burn. The pellet stove alone (50,000 BTU), even though more centrally located, could not get the first floor above 63. Fireview is a side load so don't know if that would work for you...but it allows for very small clearance to the front and my lintel is about the same as yours.

All that said, not sure you should give up on the Quad just yet - I'm sure lots of folks here will have suggestions and tips to try to get that Quad burning better for you.

Good luck!

Mary

ETA a pic of our install...the stove is just outside the fireplace opening and the door is on the right side.

my house is 7 years old and pretty tight. Air gaps sealed.

stove is in living room on 1st floor. Only 3 rooms there, kitchen, dining, and living rooms.
open staircase to 3 bedroom up stairs. heat is rising fine, upstairs ~70 degrees.

this winter has been crazy mild here in massachusetts. I am very concerned that in a
normal winter this stove couldn't keep up.

wife is still wearing sweaters and watching tv wrapped in a blanket.

this isn't what i envisioned when i dropped 3k between stove, 35 foot liner, and install.

oh, and my stove shop just replied to my email - the 2" clearance is THEIR rule, not quads.
i wanted the cumberland gap but they said no, there's not 2 inch clearance. turns out that's
their rule of thumb so they don't find out stove is too large at install. man oh man.

I've noticed Quadrafire is having a real issue with overstating specs.

A 1.5 cu ft stove is NEVER going to heat 2200 square feat... Unless it's Miami. And it isn't going to give you 9 hours of heat. More like 4-5 hours.

With your height restrictions you are limited to a rear venting stove. Here are two that would fit:

VC Encore:
Rear vent.
25.75" hieght
2.3 cu ft fire box
Catalytic
6-12 hour heat production on the newer models.
Heating capacity: Up to 1800 (take it with a grain of salt)

Jotul Oslo:
28" height
About 2.5 cu ft firebox
Non-cat
6-11 hours of heat. (burn times vary a lot depending up the user, it seems)
Heating capacity: Up to 2000 (take it with a grain of salt)

You should also look at Woodstock. The Fireview will fit, and I think Woodstock will cut the legs down on the Progess Hybrid to fit your height restrictions as well.

Fireview: About a 2 cu ft firebox. Will give you 8-12 hours of heat. Catalytic. 28" height.

Progress Hybrid: 2.75 cu ft firebox. Up to 14 hours of heat so far based on reports here. Catalytic. Rear flue height is 27.75".

The Progress Hybrid is a larger stove and would meet your needs better than the Fireview, Oslo, or the Encore.

I have not heard about the 2" clearance from the pipe to the lintel. I'm not saying they are wrong, but I would like the source of info. If this is not true, it sounds like there are several larger stoves that could work for you.

Begreen - i edited an earlier post of mine and added this -

oh, and my stove shop just replied to my email - the 2†clearance is THEIR rule, not quads.

Called Quadrafire last night.
Customer service man actually said "i don't know why you're calling us instead of your dealer" even after i explained myself.

For rear vent installs, there is a small heat shield for the pipe that is required. It is on my stove, i didn't really notice since i have
about 4 or 5 inches of clearance right now. here's there specs for the cumberland gap - do you see a heat shield? neither do i.
i asked why it isn't shown on the diagram if it's required. no answer to that.

my next stove won't be a quad.

Been up all night with a sick kid so I'm a bit frayed but a response like that would send me running to Woodstock. Send them a sketch of your space an hearth and they will talk you through what will fit. Oh and no obligation to buy for all that personal service.
