Is this a decent craigslist deal? (Intrepid II 300 bucks?)

I have been thinking about getting a smaller stove for my second floor.

Could be.

But:

-It's been repainted. Could mean overfire. Or could just be repainted.
-Most likely its the Catalytic model. Does it need a Catalyst? Does it need the Assembly? If so, that is another $300-400 dollars.

Also, how do you plan on using the stove? It is not a large stove and does not heat a large area. Also, burn times are short. Does not mean it is a bad stove, but you need to know the stove's limitations before you purchase.

It will heat about 600 sq ft with a burn time of about 4 hours.

For a few hundred dollars more you could find a used Keystone that will give you longer burn times, more control, and more heat if/when needed.

I already have a Napoleon 1402 Insert in my basement that does a great job for my 1500sq ft Bi-Level. I am really just looking for something to supplement heat to that upstairs when it gets really cold out. It wouldn't be used all the time only in the coldest parts of winter.

For me, when running more than one stove, burn times become important. If I had the choice of paying $300 plus about $350 for parts (which you might need; $250 for the assembly, $99 for the cat), I would rather find a used Keystone/Palladian for a couple of bucks more and have the much longer burn times and more flexibility.

That doesn't mean that the Intrepid is a bad stove. Just be aware that it may need parts that equal or surpass the cost of the stove.

Got ya. I haven't even looked at it or spoken to the seller yet. Assuming it has the cat and all is functional as is, would this be a solid deal?

Used, they range from $300 to $600 for the older models. And this is an older model. It is a 1303 or 1308. You can tell by the short glass windows on the doors. More recent models have taller glass inserts on the doors. This puts the stove at about 20 years of age.

You should also re-gasket the stove which includes the inside fireback, flue collar, back casting panel that holds the cat and assembly, doors, and griddle.

Thanks for all the info. I believe I will pass on it. I would really prefer a non Cat stove.

Englander 13 is cheap, non-cat, just a bit larger than the Intrepid, and easy to run.

Funny you mention that I actually bought one of those and then returned it for my Napoleon. I am familiar with that stove. I may keep my eyes out for a deal on one of those.
