I rebuilt a Quadrafire Classic Bay this year. It had been in a basement and hadn't been cleaned in a long time and had a lot of surface rust. I cleaned it with a wire brush and then used good old Naval Jelly to nutralize the corrosion. I painted it with high temp Rustoleum 'High Heat' spray designed for grills and barbecues. It came out quite good with a nice even finish. As someone else mentioned the finish is probably more matt than the original but it's not like you have a pair of them sitting next to each other for people to compare! I would clean up the inside and spray it black now because it probably has no protection. The outside you can do later when the weather is better.

Nice little project, especially at the price.

I painted all the cast in my firebox last year. I took it to a wire wheel and sprayed on very light coats. If you paint it too thick it will fall off.

Well best of luck with your rebuild when you finish you can have a pint of the black stuff as your reward oh that would be Murphys that you are from Cork

It it so true that you have to take some ricks if you want to get ahead. This one sure paid off for you. A level head and some elbow grease and look at your reward. Good deal, and thank for the much enjoyed pic's.

Great thread Corkman. Thank you for the pics, I can't wait to see the finished product!

I had a great friend from Cork, his name was John Ford. We stayed in touch for years through college but then lost contact. I had many friends from Ireland over the years while living on Cape Cod. The lads and lasses would come over on H2B or J1 visas and we built great friendships, "the crack was grand"! Cape Cod basically turned into Ireland and Jamaica with all the people coming over to work in the restaurants and hotels that drive Cape Cod economy year after year. I too am an immigrant from Brazil.

I think you got an awesome deal on the stove and are doing a great job cleaning it up. I hope it'll give you many years of good service when complete! It's a beauty.

Good luck!

im itching to get back at it but being a self employed plasterer ,gotta go when the phone rings.its been a rough few months but the phone seems to be starting to ring again.hopefully things will begin to turn around for everybody.i' ve been plastering an addition in needham for the past two days and its killing me to look out the window and see how warm it was for the past two days.don't get me wrong i love this weather but all i could think of is the stove sitting in the back of my pickup,in need of a few coats of paint and two beautiful painting days have just past me by.
this weekend i hope to get the auger out and hopefully do the crossover tube 'im hoping the dealer has those in stock .will keep you all posted

Wow!....300 bucks was a great deal :) With a little sweat equity you now have an awesome stove. The first pics. look like the original owner NEVER performed one ounce of maintenance on it! :bug: The after pics look great! You will be very happy with the Accentra.....any part is easily replaced and available to purchase. The exact paint supplied w/ my Accentra from the factory when it was new is Stovebright brand "Satin Black". I have used the can for a few touch-ups over the years and it is an exact match. Did it come with the Harman cast iron hearth pad? If not, I think it's around 200 bucks.....I highly recommend it.

Nice job !!! What did you do with the wool from the motors, knit a sweater.

Defiant,that was too funny.
hi Branson.yes it did indeed come with the pad.all the piping too.
took the auger assembly apart today to ckeck for "gummy stove" and it was clean as a whistle.i am so friggin happy about that.so i went to the dealer and got the cross over tube($16) and got that installed today.spent the rest of the day with a wire brush and some steel wool and gave all the cast a good sanding.shes just about ready for paint.i also picked up 3 cans of the stove bright satin black($33).only other thing i had to buy was the room temp probe($20).so im at $369 for a working 2004 harman accentra that will look like new when im all done.
i'm seriously contemplating replacing all the motors with new ones and keeping the originals as spares.havnt looked up any prices yet.anyone know what these harman motors fetch.

Don't quote me on this, but I believe the motors you have are far superior to the new motors. Again I can't confirm it but I was told Harman went with cheaper motors a few years back.

If the auger/combustion/convection motors are working fine I would keep them until one dies. They aren't cheap......and you're not very deep into the stove money wise. :) I would be more concerned with the door gasket . The years may have taken a toll on the integrity of it. You can get parts online at http://www.stove-parts-unlimited.com/Harman_Pellet_Stove_Parts_s/50.htm I bought an igniter there with great results.

how does one go about taking the door off.i think it will make painting a lot easier and i will do the gaskets while i have it off.they do seem good as they passed the dollar bill test but i think i am going to do it anyway.also ,who has taken their combustion blower out.doesnt seem easy to get out.

hi all.well with the great weather we've had around here i was able to get the accentra all finished up.i did get the door off and i stripped it down completely.removed the glass and gasket, the door gasket and the door latch mechanism.the inside of the door was rusted up pretty good so i used the wagner paint eater on it and it did a pisser job.i wiped the door down and the following day gave both sides of the door 2 coats of paint.installed new door gasket and window gasket, polished up the glass and reinstalled the latch mechanism.
used the paint eater on the body of the stove, removed the hopper lid and covered the remainder of the stove with masking tape and painters paper.gave the stove body 2 coats of paint . i reinstalled the door and hopper lid.
today i filled the hopper half way and let her rip to burn of the new paint smell before i bring her indoors.
the plan was to put this stove in the basement but it polished up so nice that i think the meridian is gonna go in the basement and this will go in the sunroom.
this was my 1st attempt at stripping down a stove and thanks to you all for your help along the way.it was a fun project.
will post a bunch more pics in the next day or so.

told ya it happened dex
