I am not into the topic of surge protection as I should be. What is the best protection out there, Belkin, Monster?

Eric

I'd ask your electric company to install an entire house protection unit. Duke Energy installed one for me and there is a minor cost....$2.00/month.

That's what I use. It doesn't have the highest protection from spikes but in my area frequent momentary drops in electric power are a bigger concern. People don't realize that when the electric company drops your service and then restores it, the voltage goes VERY high for an instant before settling back down. Also, in times of overusage, you can get brown outs where the voltage drops significantly before it's lost completely. Both of these conditions can destroy your circuitry and this device protects against that. I have made boxes for my computers that have a holding contact so that when voltage is lost, the contact opens and must be manually reset once power is restored. This obviously would not be the best solution for stoves though.

this cheap POS.

Im using an APC as my surge protector because it is absolutely useless as a batery back up since its not pure sine wave.

This is what a lot of us are using. Great quality and affordable at around $25. Cheap insurance...

I just bought 2 of these based on good reviews.

This a good unit based on the specs. I have been using one on my stove, and recommending to other forum members.

I have one for each stove. Bought it based on Imacman's recommendation. Also picked up two of the strips for tv rooms. So far so good. These units feel very well made. Let's hope they hold up to the surge!

That's a good unit too, especially if the outlet isn't close enough and you need the extra cord length to make it reach.

APC Smart-UPS 1200, keeps me warm for a bit when the power goes out. Granted a 1200VA is overkill but I got it cheap, just had to replace the batteries.

Both stoves plugged into a UPS.
Good for surge and keeps the stove running long enough for the
generator to kick in when needed.

Thanks all I bought a Tripp Lite 428 from ebay today, $19.98 with free shipping. I will try it. I had my Mt Vernon on one but after working a repair order on another Mt Vernon that is out of warranty I want a very good one. Parts alone might excede $850 to get this one running again. $20 bucks is worth the price.

My house was built in 1930. The wiring is 2 wire, pos. and neg. No ground. Supposedly the whole house is grounded by a copper wire attached to my water meter. I currently have to use an extension cord for my stove. Will a surge protecter plugged into an extension cord give me the protection I need?

i think if you have a heavy guage extension cord you will be fine.
i did get your pm the isobar 4ultra has a six foot cord.
and that link for amazon for $39 is the best i've found.
i almost wonder if it's expired. though it shows as current. if you are thinking about that one, i'd jump on it for $39 w/ free shipping. others are selling it for almost $60

but the two plug tripp lite folks are using is great too. don't know how long the cord is.
i'm no electrician. but i know if you get the right guage extension cord, you'll be fine.
it's when you have too small a cord for the load that it becomes a fire hazard.

but a good cord will cost you a bit too.
if six feet od cord is enough, go for the isobar4ultra (if you can get it for $39) and have a heavy duty surge protector.
and you get four outlets in the deal :p
they are all isolated from each other too. so if you have a tv or other electronics close enough, you can use it for them too.

Thanks for the info. I don't have any other electronics close enough to my stove to use the 4 outlet Tripp Lite It might make more sense to me to buy some 14 gauge wire and heavy duty plug and outlet and custom make a cord and get the double outlet Tripp Lite for $25.00. I depends on te cost of the materials, I guess.
