Nothing like having a chimney fire with more places in the chimney from which to feed air to the fire. BTW Nice install!

I like the PVC drain pipe thats around 6 inches above that flue pipe. The whole dang install is flim flam to say the least. Thank God no innocent people lost their lives to that thing....

Is that HVAC round duct I see used as a connector? With some asbestos tape to boot? Whoa.

As easy as it is to vilify someone for their sloppy safety standards, I have a hard time believing that anyone is that casual about their known risks, or that they have a deliberate wanton urge to inflict pain on others. Truly, most often it is attributable to a lack of knowledge, and a lack of money to do it correctly. Usually, the lack of money is the predominant reason.

What it does do is make you examine, and re-examine, your own choices and methods of burning. We might think we are all immune from mishap, and I do like my odds of not having anything this obvious occur, but I won't court fate by saying "never."
Very well stated, ploughboy. Everything you wrote here gets a big "+1" from this guy!

I think some people are just oblivious to danger, or don't care cuzz that's how we always did it, or are just stupid. Seems cruel to say because we would like to give people the benefit of doubt but read or watch the news and then decide. Be safe.

there is are large numbers of people who knowingly...KNOWINGLY, enter into dangerous relationships with fire and suffer for it. I point these things out to people on a daily basis and am met with "Well, its been fine like this" when I tell them I will not service their units installed with dryer vents or PVC or sitting on MDF with tinfoil on it. There are certainly cases of "I just didn't know" and I'll cut those people some slack. There are also people who inhereit other peoples ignorance...like buying a home that has a poor installation in it. Not knowing is one thing, when you get educated and still choose to be "casual about the known risks"....fire burns.

Hey Jake, how many local folks you have that use the FD as a chimney sweep service every year? We have a few that you could set your watch to. Scary stuff.

. . . so being curious I responded with a camera.

So, are you waiting for the pics to develop or something?

Follow up . . . apartment owner who had the woodstove has wisely opted to just junk the stove and is now heating with either gas or oil (I forget which set up is there . . . oil I think.)

That is a wise choice by the owner.
