Here is another shot of the trunk of the mystery tree.

Indeed I see Shagbark too the Left
Looks like Elm species on the right to me.

I can tell ya that your samples are not:
Pignut Hickory
It's most defiantly not White Oak or Hard Maple.

Shagbark Nuts are Huge
Pignut are 1/3 the size

Look for leaves on the ground. C'mon we are waiting..........

I have a Sugar Maple Sample somewhere...............

Wrong about it not being Sugar/Hard Maple ?
I'll post some pictures this weekend, the bark just doesn't match up.
I still say some sort of Elm species, I've been wrong before.......but learning all these types of wood is interesting.
Especially if I've never put it through my splitter.

I'm taking the hard maple side, but please cut it up already and tell us for sure before somebody gets hurt.

I have sugar bush all the way up my 400' driveway and the bark looks nothing like Ralph's photos.
His tree is either Elm or a Hybridized Hickory.
But Hickory has much tighter triangular pattern especially for Mockernut (generally)
See my pics of Sugar/Hard Maple both juvenile and adult.

It could get ugly; We need to settle this NOW!

Ralph, you need to get busy with the saw, maul and camera, pronto!

Whatever woodbutcher, I owned a hardwood sawmill in northern mi. for 20 years. I sawed in excess of 2 million board feet of hard maple for 20 years. I have no idea what a fricking h. maple looks like!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have bought about 40 million board feet of H maple both standing and in log form I think I know my hard maple. People on this site are just goofy.

After a lot of looking I've believe this tree to be Blue Ash. It should be out in a few more days so I'll know for sure then.;lol
