Heard the saw running again. Hopped in the hoopdie and drove to the sound. Local tree service providing more heat for the Declaration. The foreman was cool, directing one of his helpers to drop off a small load next to my driveway. I live right around the corner from where they were cutting.

Pic 1: The log drop off.
Pic 2: Doin' some bucking.

Great score. Got a good bit there. Enjoy the heat!

Pic 3: A night shot of my day's work.
Pic 4: All cleaned up.

I'm guessing that load gave me a cord. 3 full kitchen trash bags of kerf.

P.S. Passed on the elm. Too many horror stories and I'm thinking the back yard can't handle any more wood.

Wow - free and delivered is kind of tough to beat. You may not have wanted to turn down that elm, it may effect your "scrounge karma" in the future.

I know what the BTU charts say but I find Elm to burn super hot and leave very little ash so I would take all I can get. Elm is a favorite of mine.

Burns hot and seasons fast. It's plentiful in my area, and I always have some on hand.

The price is right andI like the silver for shoulder season and start ups!

I knew it was Silver as soon as I saw it. Not my favorite, but couldn't pass it up cause as a scrounger you never know when the next scrounge is. This should put me in the 3.5-4 cord range for next year.

That is correct Blu.

Better close-up pictures would help but it does not look like silver maple to me.

Dennis:

If this isn't Silver, then I don't know what Silver look and feels like. Identical to the two I have in my yard.

Stax, I'll take your word for that one. ;-)

Thanks Sav. The stuff was splitting like butter yesterday. I barely had to swing the x27. My buddy has a 15' Black Locust log laying on the embankment of the creek next to his house. Hope to cut and carry that today. After that I should be good for next year.

What kind of elm? I've been buring a lot of what I think is Siberian Elm this (so-called) winter, and it leaves more ash than any wood I've ever burned. Partly because of the high bark-to-wood ratio I guess, but locust (for example) also has thick bark without the quantity of ash.
