Have a teacher at the school I work at sell her house, and she said she has a tree that was down in the storm, cut up and stacked.....easy to get to...if I want it, it's mine....took 3 pieces yesterday just to get an ID before I grab 3 truck loads...good thing is (other than free) it's about 1/2 mile from work. I don't have time to split it this morning, so all I've got is pictures of a round......What say you....is it Black Cherry ???

Doesn't look like any black cherry I've cut - the large amount of sapwood is different than I've seen, heartwood color seems off, and bark doesn't look quite right. Looks to me like some kind of conifer, but I'm not sure. Cheers!

It is black cherry with small heartwood.

Black cherry it is.
I'll second NH_Wood's take; Bark and sapwood look different from what I usually see...but the heartwood is a dead giveaway.

I Just cut up some Cherry...give it a sniff,, let your nose be the judge ;-)

It's Kentucky Coffee tree. Should have a slightly pungeant smell to it compared to a very sweet fruity smell of Cherry. Let us know what she smells like!

"It's Kentucky Coffee tree".....in SW Connecticut ???.....is it worth getting 3 pick up trucks of this stuff.....I can afford to be picky.

Kentucky Coffee Tree is excellent firewood, but that stuff looks suspiciously pinaceous to me.

Hmmm...it does, doesn't it?
Hope BB doesn't have anywhere to go after work, so he can get home and split that thing. :cheese:

That is Cherry. Around here we call it Wild Cherry. I burn a lot of it every year. We do have Black Cherry it has a smoother bark.

Lee is 100% correct. that is definately black cherry, split it and you will smell the wonderful aroma of it. No doubt in my mind! I've cut TONS of it and it looks exactly like your sample piece. Bark, sapwood, and heartwood.....

BB work day starts at 7:15 am and ends 11:30 pm.....but I do have tomorrow morning off.....I'll try to give it a whack then ;-P

Looks like pine to me.
Web pics can be decieving color-wise, but still the rings look a bit fat, soft and the heartwood doesn't look quite dark enough for cherry and the outer wood a bit white.

I wouldn't want to bet any money on this one.

Bill I got to looking at that too, the annular rings look really wide apart. I may have to eat my words (gulp). I will wait for the verdict tomorrow, but the more I look at that pic, the more it is looking like a red spruce....

My money is still on Cherry. Every Cherry I cut looks a little different on the ends, some can be very orange some whiteish or a mix. But my wife will tell you I have been wrong at least once this year maybe twice.

+1

I've got an early appointment....maybe get to swing the maul at it around 11am....then I'll try to upload a picture, and tell ya what it smelled like

I hope it's cherry.
The bark does look like it.
The ends don't.

I'm going to go with cherry on this one. My reasoning is that the round has checking on the ends, which means it was cut some time ago. I've had cherry splits that were salmon-pink when fresh, and by the time it came to burn them, they had turned to tan color. the color of the heartwood is what I'm keying on here. Just for reference, pine rounds are light, even when freshly cut. Cherry should have SOME weight to it, even if it's been cut for a while.

This was cut during our winter storm in October 2011.....a coworker thought it felt heavy.

Here it is....split, no outstanding odor to it

OK, I'm going back to LEE's original ID, Cherry, although you should be able to smell that fragrance. It's not overpowering, but it should be there. Maybe your nose is full of sawdust...
You can also see the horizontal stripes on the bark in the new pics. I'm sure there's some botanical name for them... :smirk:

Thanks guys.....going to pick up a truck load on my way to work....then hit it again tomorrow :cheese:

Good move. It's a medium-heat wood but you'll like it. Burns well and smells great. I stacked some in August, split small, but it didn't get quite dry enough, hissed and had a few wet spots on the end of the splits when burned. Get it stacked soon and it may be good this Winter....
