Feeling the Heat

First off I'd like to thank those who replied to my previous threads I posted while trying to decide what stove would suit me best. One thread was an Oslo vs. Castine thread while the other was an Oslo vs. Hearthstone Heritage. All answers were very helpful and today I ordered up a Blue/Black Oslo. I feel I paid a fair price for the stove @ $2,199 +tax. The hearth pad, thimble, piping, and installation will be extra of course.

Now the debate is how to vent the stove. My wife really wants to rear/horizontal exit so as not to see any vertical stove pipe in the house. I want vertical for the obvious beneficial reasons of draft, future stove alignment, and extra heat from pipe. She is willing to go with an 18"-24" vertical run then the 90 through the wall but I think it may look more silly with a short vertical run as opposed to a 36"-48" run. any thoughts?

If a customer doesnt have a preference and we are dealing with an 8' ceiling, we'll use a 36" pipe and then a 90 to the wall. Just put the 36", tell her it is 2' and hope she can't use a tape measurer!

Minor details, really. You bought a hell of a stove and you are going to love it. Try to post some installation photos as the job goes along (if you are home)

Awesome!. Curious on where you purchased it? Did you get it at Preston Trading Post? I'm looking to purchase a wood stove as well and really like the Oslo too. Good Luck.

Now that right there was the right decision, of course, I'm a bit biased :)

I say straight up through the roof would be the best setup.

If you have to go through a wall, thimble and such, I vote for up 3 ft. then 90degree through the wall.....that way if you change up stoves in the future you have a much, MUCH, better chance of fitting up a new unit, although I'm 5 years into burning the Oslo and have no desire to buy a new stove yet!

Congratulations on the new stove ! Can you put up pics of where you want to put it maybe even some of the surrounding trees buildings and so on? Every setup is different and objects can be a problem to overcome. If you put up pics maybe some one can give advice on the best spot ! The F-500 we looked at retailed for 2499 so good job and congratulations on the stove. We have discovered Jotul to have superb customer service to our surprise I hope your experience is as good.

Good Luck
Pete

Congrats on the stove! Are you planning on doing the install yourself?

Will be installed by subcontractor the stove shop uses. I'm a handy guy but I'm better at mechanics that construction so I'll leave cutting holes in my wall to somebody else with more experience..

I will post before and after pictures if I'm home.

Of course you want to go straight up with no turns. It will run better and those elbows cost A LOT of money (hundreds wink wink).

Straight up is not an option. I must go through my wall at some point.

Any other confessions you want to make my son while you are in the booth?

Good choice, but I am biased as well :)

I'll get rid of my Oslo when they pry it from my very cold, hypothermic hands . . . otherwise I'm keeping it . . . even if I didn't get the blue black Oslo. Congrats.

In my completely unbiased *cough* opinion, you made a great choice.

Unfortunately, though, you fired up my blue-black-enamel envy again!

Happy burning!

To keep the peace with the wife I've agreed to rear exit the stove and go straight through the wall. I know this will be an issue if I ever decide to change stoves but from the praise you're all giving the Oslo it's sounds like that won't happen any time soon. Draft may be affected a bit on cold starts but some here have said it won't be an issue. It should be installed in about 3 weeks.
