This is going on my second month. I bought a ton of Maine choice for $219 a ton (didn't know what I was buying). To me they burn good, good heat but a lot of ash. I would have to clean every 3 days.

Last week I bought 10 bags of inferno's at Lowes to try, still have some of the Maines choice. First they smell bad, kinda of long. Hardley no ash at all but very morning I clean out the burn pot and it's caked up with real hard, stone like material. Is this a SIGN OF GOOD OR BAD PELLETS.

YES! They are about the worst out there right now! They are made from contruction waste so who knows whats in them. Good thing you didn't buy a whole ton!!

Whats the hard stone like material it leaves in the burn pot.

Chlorides or salt from the wood. Fused with the ash and its called a clinker.

You see some of the PFI labels list chloride content and also on the Twinport test data sheets.

Edit, wingnut might be right. If its stuck to the burnpot its carbon. Most pellets will have that. But the crappy ones seem to have lots of it.

Technically it is sintered ash, more commonly called a clinker.

It will not burn when subjected to more heat unlike carbon.
